Transfer update:Auburn linebacker reacts to reports of Auburn tigers key player leaving for similar role at Florida
|Auburn linebacker reacts to reports of DC Ron Roberts leaving for similar role at Florida
After serving as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator for just one season, all
indications point to Ron Roberts leaving Auburn to accept a position at Florida.
The news of Roberts’ transfer was initially reported by Matt Zenitz of
247Sports on Monday afternoon. Several other reporters covering the Auburn and Florida beats also confirmed the claims.
Additionally, it appears that people in Auburn’s
locker room have apparently
heard about the news, based on Auburn linebacker Eugene Asante’s Instagram story.
Asante stated, “Coach Ron Roberts took an LB who (was) thought not good enough to play by a previous staff and
helped him become one of the SEC’s top tacklers.” “It is foolish of you to claim he
isn’t a good coach; he should be investigated.”
Before Roberts arrived in 2022, Asante participated in just four games and made one tackle.
With 86 total tackles this past season, Asante led Auburn’s tackling efforts and will rank sixth in the SEC in 2023.
“Coach, I appreciate everything you did for
me,” Asante went on. “As a player,
you gave me confidence, and I’ll apply all you taught me on a regular basis. Wishing you luck in Florida.
Asante continued by tagging Shemar James, a linebacker for Florida, in the post and said, “You got a good one.”
Reunited with Billy Napier, Roberts is expected to take on the roles of executive
head coach for defense, co-defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach at
Florida. When Napier was the head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, Roberts
and Napier had previously worked together as coaches.
