So sad as Jets have fired a top player to reduce salary capĀ

The Giants are in need of help at the offensive guard position, and with the

recent release of a guard by the Jets, Laken Tomlinson could potentially be a target for East Rutherford.

According to ESPN, the Jets parted ways with Tomlinson on Monday, which provides them with $8.1 million in cap

space for 2024, while carrying $10.7 million in dead money. Tomlinson, aged 32, had been with the Jets since 2022, and

while his age may factor into the Giants’ decision-making process, they do have vacancies at both guard positions.

Furthermore, Tomlinson, a Pro Bowler in 2021 with the 49ers, boasts an impressive attendance record, having not missed a game since the 2017 season, with his only absence in his nine-year career occurring during the 2015 campaign when he missed just one game. Last season, Tomlinson played every snap. Including playoff appearances, he has participated in 153 games, starting in 145 of them.

Throughout his NFL career, Tomlinson has primarily played as a left guard, although he did see some action as a right guard during his time with the Lions, who drafted him 28th overall in 2015, where he logged 65 snaps in 2016.

Regarding his performance with the Jets, he delivered average performances over the past two seasons, earning Pro Football Focus grades of 55.0 last season and 56.8 in 2022, marking a significant decline from his standout 73.6 grade in 2021. Despite this decline, the Jets paid Tomlinson nearly $27 million for his services over the past two seasons.

Considering his age and recent performance, the Giants, who are not currently in a win-now mode, may be hesitant to pursue Tomlinson. However,

given his recent performance, Tomlinson may not command a hefty contract at this stage of his career. While he

demonstrated proficiency in pass blocking with grades of 70.2 and 60.6 in 2022 and last season, respectively, his

run-blocking abilities declined, with grades of 46.9 and 49.6 in the same periods. In his Pro Bowl season of 2021, Tomlinson showcased balanced skills,

earning grades of 69.2 in pass blocking and 75.3 in run blocking, but he has not replicated that level of effectiveness since.
