Jermaine Beckford is pleased with Leeds United’s FA Cup victory over Plymouth Argyle despite “terrible” conditions.
Leeds won 4-1 after extra time against their Championship rivals at Home Park,
after the fourth-round replay ended 1-1 in regulation.
The weather made things difficult for both sets of players, as noted by
Beckford, who covered the game for BBC Sport.
“It was a dominant display from Leeds after Plymouth started the game well,”
he told Sky Sports News the next morning [7 February, 10:33am].
“They used the elements and their fans to incite hostility. It was very enjoyable,
despite the fact that the weather was terrible.
“Both teams performed admirably in the face of strong winds and heavy rain.
Both teams delivered an excellent performance.
Both goalkeepers and defenses were tested. It was an energetic game, and I
believe Leeds should have won in regular time.
“But it wasn’t to be as both keepers were on top form.”
Leeds United advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup. While Daniel Farke would
have preferred a win in normal time, the main goal is to advance.
Leeds has not had a deep run in this competition in a long time, and they will
face either Aston Villa or Chelsea later this month.
As Beckford pointed out, the conditions on the South Coast were truly appalling;
no one sitting at home envied the players.
Those who made the trip on a midweek night on short notice, with another trip
to Plymouth planned for the following week, deserve high praise.
The victory ensures that the Whites still have plenty to play for on several fronts
as we gear up for the business end of the season.
