Following a string of losses, Sunderland star had an open message for his Sunderland teammates.

Sunderland: Patrick Roberts previews Millwall after successive defeats

Sunderland’s players, according to PATRICK Roberts, accept responsibility for their two dismal losses to Plymouth and Huddersfield, and they are eager to bounce back when they meet Millwall tomorrow.

Following back-to-back losses in the last week, Sunderland has dropped out of the top six and into 11th place in the Championship table. The Huddersfield setback is especially disappointing considering the Terriers’ awful performance before their Wearside trip.

Roberts says that despite Tony Mowbray’s team’s extreme youth and relative inexperience, the players cannot use this as an excuse.

“I think we have to take responsibility as a team, the manager will take his responsibility and we’ll take responsibility as players and take accountability that we’ve not been good enough,” said the forward.

We all need to work through it and come up with a solution on the pitch. Now is the time for everyone to buckle down, heal, and return over the weekend.

“The majority of our team is under the age of 23. Even at 26, almost 27, I consider myself to be fairly young.

“It’s hard but at the same time we’re a big club and there are those expectations on you, no matter your age you should be going out there wanting to impress and wanting to show you are a good player and win for this team.”

On Wednesday night, Huddersfield was geared up to stifle. Roberts acknowledges that Sunderland prefers to play against sides that want to go toe-to-toe rather than frustrate, but he feels the Black Cats must overcome this if they hope to duplicate their top-six performance from the previous year.

“You have so many men behind the ball there is only so much you can do and sometimes it’s really hard to break them down and that’s what they’ve come here to do,” he continues.

Teams come here to accomplish that, so we need to figure out how to get there in

the very end. We need to figure out how to get past such defenses. We must

examine it, draw lessons from it, and apply them to the upcoming match.

“When playing other teams, it can be a little simpler, but they also have quality,

so if you don’t put it away, you better be strong in

the back because they can

cause harm. We must become a squad that many other teams are afraid of, and

demonstrate our ability to score goals and keep them out.

We’ll work together to address the need for all elements to function as a cohesive

unit. Together, we triumph and fail as a team. All we can do is learn.
