Players from Chelsea and Brighton fight during stoppage time as Pochettino step in

Chelsea and Brighton players clash after stoppage-time drama as Pochettino steps in

Emotions ran high at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea held off Brighton to clinch three Premier League points.

After the final siren at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Chelsea players clashed with

Brighton, forcing Mauricio Pochettino to step in and mediate. The Seagulls had

hope after a protracted VAR consultation during second-half stoppage time, but

the hosts prevailed 3-2 despite their best efforts.

After a back-and-forth match that left fans on a knife-edge in west London,

tensions flared. Despite goals from Facundo Buonanotte and Joao Pedro for

the visitors, a brace from Enzo Fernandez and a header from Levi

Colwill proved to be enough to see Chelsea through on home soil.

Conor Gallagher’s red card left the Blues with one man short of the goal at

halftime, and the Seagulls were expected to fight their way back into the match.

Pawson seemed to point to the spot at first, even though it was obvious that the

ball had struck him in the face, but eventually it was announced that, oddly, possession would go back to Chelsea.

Players for Brighton were incensed that despite the ball cannoning off Colwill and leaving the field of play, no corner

was given. After the final whistle, Seagulls players surrounded the referee

to express their outrage, intensifying the team’s protests.

Pochettino was compelled to intervene and diffuse the situation as Chelsea players joined the dispute. The fact that

Moises Caicedo, a former midfield player for Brighton, did not receive a second

yellow card during the match infuriated Brighton supporters even more, and not

everyone agreed that James Milner’s tackle on Mykhaylo Mudryk warranted

the penalty kick that resulted in the Blues’ third goal.

Once the post-match drama subsided, Pochettino ignored the controversy,

maintaining that his team deserved the victory that moved them up to 10th place in the Premier League standings.

The Argentine said, “We deserved the victory.” Analyzing the game reveals that

we were fiercely competitive. We needed to show a different side after [the

Newcastle loss], and the team responded really well, so it was a big win for us.

At halftime, I informed the players that we had a tremendous chance to

demonstrate our unity as a team. We approached the second half in that

manner. Yes, we discussed how we should play, but challenging Brighton

with one less man was the most crucial thing to do.”
