Full FA Cup third round draw – Sunderland v Newcastle United nailed on for TV with Arsenal v Liverpool

The third round FA Cup draw was a low-key affair.

 

Until the names were drawn at random, that is.

 

The FA Cup third round draw was so low key that many Newcastle United supporters were still recovering from their fantastic late Sunday night dominance of Man U when it took place at 1pm on Sunday afternoon.

 

The most notable tie of the three drawn matches was Arsenal vs. Liverpool.

But midway through, when Premier League fifth-place team was drawn away against a lower league team, that Premier League top vs. second in the table matchup was dwarfed.

 

Yes, Sunderland vs. Newcastle is unquestionably a bigger match than any

match between the top two teams in Premier League One, at least in this part of the world!

 

The fact that the two clubs have avoided one another for such a long time is truly amazing. Though this is mostly

explained, at least in part, by the decades of failure. For instance, even though not

all of these teams have had much success in recent years, they have at least been

somewhat competitive, meaning that Man U vs. Man City and Liverpool have

far more opportunities. versus Everton and Arsenal versus Spurs recently, as

they had a tendency to go much farther than the Mackems and us.

This Sunderland vs. Newcastle match will be the first derby in eight years after

Mitro’s late equalizer at St. James’ Park in a 1-1 draw, just weeks before relegation

was confirmed back in 2016. Hopefully, there

won’t be any more ships sinking or

wars breaking out on either side of that match.
