Former Sunderland favorite says the team may “regret” firing Tony Mowbray.
|Michael Gray says Sunderland could ‘regret’ sacking Tony Mowbray
MICHAEL GRAY claims Sunderland could come to “regret” their decision to part company with head coach Tony Mowbray.
Despite the Black Cats being only three points outside of the play-off spots in ninth place in the Championship, Mowbray was dismissed late on Monday night.
The former manager of Middlesbrough, Blackburn, and Celtic guided Sunderland
into the playoffs the previous year, but they ultimately lost to Luton Town in the
semifinals. Following last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Millwall, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and
Kristjaan Speakman made the decision to fire the manager.
Born in Sunderland After making over 350 appearances for his hometown team, Gray gained popularity on Wearside and gained respect as a pundit. He was taken aback by Mowbray’s abrupt resignation.
Gray posted on social media, saying, “(I’m) shocked.” Overall, Tony Mowbray has done an outstanding job of
energizing the team and is well-liked by both players and supporters. I hope he
has the best possible future. Tony, good luck with your upcoming appointment. I
hope your leaving is not something we regret.
Amad Diallo, who was on loan from Manchester United to Sunderland last
season, became good friends with Mowbray while he was on Wearside.
