Roberto De Zerbi responds to former Chelsea star’s claims over Brighton’s apparent weakness ahead of Brentford and Burnley games

Roberto De Zerbi says Billy Gilmour is becoming a very good player but was
partly at fault for Chelsea’s third goal against Brighton.
Roberto De Zerbi has responded to Chelsea hero Joe Cole’s claims that
Brighton need to improve when facing counter-attacking sides.
Albion have suffered some noteworthy defeats under the Italian head coach
since taking charge of the Sussex side in September 2022, including a 5-1 home
loss to Everton last season and a 3-1 reverse against West Ham this term.
After applying a low block and absorbing the Seagulls’ pressure, both teams hurt
them during the transition. Every strategy has a vulnerability that can be
taken advantage of, and now De Zerbi has provided an explanation for his
preference for pushing a lot of players forward in an attempt to score a goal.
Cole stated on TNT Sports: “I think of the team’s performance against Everton last
year, West Ham (this season), as the one area where they could improve.” when the changes in personnel occur.”
The 44-year-old said in response, “As you can see, the goal is obvious. It is
impossible to give up a goal on the counterattack when attacking with three
players, but it is feasible to do so when attacking with a large number of players.
“The defensive aspect of things is the same. It’s possible to give up in open
space if you press your opponent man-to-man. You must choose your course of
action before the game because waiting in your final 20 meters will result in a
score on the counter. and become whatever you wish to.
Last season, we used four attackers in our lineup. We had more control over
the game and the play because [Alexis] Mac Allister frequently played as a number 10. However, right now we are
using four attackers—Joao Pedro, Ansu Fati, Evan Ferguson, and Danny Welbeck
—who are not number 10s. They want to go score as soon as they get the ball.”
It will be interesting to watch how Burnley and Brentford prepare for their
next games against Brighton in the coming week.
