Star outfielder acquired by Yankees in startling trade with Red Sox

Possibly the most famous rivalry in sports is that between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. But on

Tuesday, the two teams united for a significant trade that included star outfielder Alex Verdugo.

Most famously, Verdugo was the key component that the Red Sox acquired

back in the 2020 trade for Mookie Betts. He has been a very effective player for the Red Sox ever since.

The Red Sox made the decision on Tuesday to trade him, so he will now be bringing his skills to New York. From the

Yankees, the Red Sox will be getting back Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert, and Nicholas Judice.

Notably, Fitts is ranked No. 12 in the Yankees farm system, and Judice was selected in the eighth round.

Verdugo excels at a specific baseball skill that makes him one of the league’s best players: hitting for a high average and getting on base. In both categories, the

Yankees were among the bottom five teams in all of baseball, so there is definitely a need that this trade addresses.

Social media was used by fans to voice their thoughts about the changes

Secondly, it’s surprising to see the Yankees trade for Verdugo in particular because most fans assumed that they would be going after another left-handed hitting outfielder.

San Diego Padres star Juan Soto has been tied in trade talks with the Yankees over the past few months.

However, according to multiple reports, this trade likely won’t take the Yankees out of the running for Soto.

The Yankees offense would undergo a complete makeover if they were to sign
both Soto and Verdugo this offseason, which would seem to be a crucial task for their team heading into 2024.
It’s a pretty great start to the Yankees offseason, at the very least.
