12 players are out, with two questionable: the most recent injury update prior to tonight’s match between Leeds United and Sunderland

Sunderland v Leeds United injury latest as 12 players ruled out and two doubtful

Sunderland is getting ready for one of their most difficult Championship matches to date.

This evening, the Black Cats will play Leeds United, and Mike Dodds will serve as the team’s second-term interim head coach.

Before Tony Mowbray was fired, Wearside had dropped out of the play-off spots, but they have since risen to sixth place thanks to an outstanding victory over West Brom over the weekend.

After their performance on Saturday, Sunderland will be brimming with

confidence, but defeating Leeds will require their best effort yet.

After a sluggish start to the season, Daniel Farke’s team has picked up steam

in the last eleven games, dropping just one.

The Whites, who currently occupy the third spot in the Championship, will be keen to get closer to the automatic spots.

Both teams will be fighting for the win, but they also have a lot of injury issues that have hindered them during the first four months of the season.

Before the game tonight, we examine every injury that each team currently has.

Sunderland – six ruled out, one doubt

Following knee ligament damage in January, Corry Evans is out for the foreseeable future.

The midfield player expressed hope that he would resume training “in about five or six weeks” back in November.

Though he has also been sidelined for the majority of the year due to a long-term injury, Aji Alese appears to be nearing a return more quickly than his teammate. The U21s are presently training with the defender.

Elliott Embleton’s loan stint at Derby County came to an early end due to a

thigh injury that will keep him sidelined for an extended amount of time.

Timothee Pembele has been ruled out of tonight’s match, but he is back in training

and may make his Sunderland debut this month.

Since contracting a virus while on international duty, Jewison Bennette has

not played. He will be sidelined tonight due to an injury.

Dennis Cirkin, who has missed the previous five games due to a hamstring injury, is also sidelined.

With an injury sustained during the preseason, Jay Matete is the lone question mark. The midfield player has returned to training, but it’s uncertain if he’ll be ready for a bench role.

Leeds United – six ruled out, one doubt

Patrick Bamford’s illness kept Leeds United from winning their match against Blackburn Rovers, which was a further setback. According to Daniel Farke, the striker hasn’t practiced as of yesterday and won’t be traveling with them up north.

Along with Sam Byram’s hamstring injury, which will sideline him for a few weeks, the Whites manager also disclosed that Jamie Shackleton will miss time due to a glute injury.

Ian Poveda will also be unavailable because he is currently getting ready for the Colombia squad’s friendly against Mexico, which is scheduled for this coming weekend.

Stuart Dallas is still sidelined for the duration of the season, and Junior Firpo will be out until the end of the month due to a hamstring injury.

Lastly, Luke Ayling is questionable due to a knee injury that kept him out of the Blackburn game.
