Club confirms transfer talks with Brighton; player scheduled for surgery; long-term play
|Club confirm transfer negotiations with Brighton – Long-term play as player set for surgery
Negotiations are underway between Sturm Graz and Brighton & Hove Albion regarding goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen’s
return on loan for the upcoming season, following his surgical recovery.
This is according to club spokesman Stefan Haller, who has verified that the young player will miss the remainder of
the campaign due to surgery for a left knee cruciate ligament injury.
Der Standard explain that Sturm Graz will have
to be without Scherpen, who joined on loan from Brighton in the
summer ‘for a long time’ after the decision was made for him to go under
the knife on an injury picked up in training in the summer.
He managed to play through the discomfort of the injuries he sustained
before the season even started, but he will have surgery in London on Tuesday.
Since then, the 23-year-old has made 27 appearances for Sturm Graz; his most
recent appearance came on Thursday during the team’s 3-0 Europa League loss to Sporting Club de Portugal.
However, the decision has now been made for him to permanently resolve the
issue, as Haller has confirmed that negotiations with Brighton are in
progress to allow him to return on loan for the upcoming season.
He declared, “He won’t play any more games for us this season.”
“We are now wrapping up the loan extension talks. He is scheduled to be lent out once more in 2024–2025.
“He was genuinely eager to to support the team and played without any issues. He could have played the next year as
well, but the surgery is being done to safeguard his future rather than
jeopardize his long-term professional career.
