The bullpen of the St. Louis Cardinals needs to be strengthened.

With a dismal 4.47 bullpen ERA in 2023, St. Louis was ranked twenty-third. The

Cardinals appeared to regress in every facet of the roster for the 2023 season.

The Cardinals struggled in 2023 despite having the 11th-best bullpen ERA in baseball in 2022 (3.61).

The fact that St. Louis’ starting rotation was among the worst in baseball was a

major contributing factor to their difficulties. Because the starters were

unable to extend games past late, the Cardinals’ bullpen was put under much greater strain.

The fact that St. Louis was one of the top sellers prior to the 2023 Major League

Baseball Trade Deadline was another factor that hurt the bullpen. The

Cardinals struggled with a thin roster, and their season didn’t turn out as planned.

As part of their efforts to turn things around, St. Louis signed Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson, which has

strengthened the rotation. The Cardinals are now concentrating on strengthening their bullpen.

The Cardinals might want to pursue former Atlanta Braves pitcher Collin McHugh, one free agent that is available.

According to Spotrac, the 36-year-old is expected to sign a deal worth slightly

more than $4.5 million a year as a free agent. In free agency, St. Louis most certainly could afford such a deal.

McHugh recorded a 2.60 ERA in 58 games with the Braves in 2022, but had a poor

year in 2023 with a 4.30 ERA in 41 appearances. He is undoubtedly a candidate for a comeback. With a career

3.72 ERA, he has 11 years of big league experience under his belt. Without a doubt, St. Louis ought to consider signing
