‘It’s up to the crowd’ – Sunderland vs Coventry City prediction: The72

Before Saturday’s Championship match, The72’s writers predict Sunderland vs. Coventry City.

The former Rangers manager is getting ready to take charge of his first game in the northeast, and the Black Cats are ready to start the Michael Beale era. Sunderland is very almost in the top six, currently occupying the seventh slot in the second division.

Though Coventry City, led by Mark Robins, is currently in the bottom part of the Championship, they are only nine points shy of the play-offs, and a victory this weekend would put them squarely in the mix for a spot in the top six.

Here are some of our writers’ predictions for the match…

Thomas Kelly-Hansford

“The neutral can always benefit from this game. If Sunderland hopes to finish in the top six again, they must address their lack of consistency this season. Beale will be eager to make his own mark on things now, and it seems important that he gets off to a strong start given the criticism from supporters regarding his hiring.

One team that usually has Sunderland’s number is the Sky Blues. They have not lost against Sunderland since 2007 and are unbeaten in their last six meetings with them.

“This game will be close regardless of league positions.” Though I believe the points will be shared, I can see a lot of issues that the visitors will bring to Sunderland.

James Ray

“In this game, the home crowd will have a significant impact. Although Sunderland supporters have not been overly thrilled with Beale’s appointment, they will need to support the new manager and his team despite their displeasure with his presence because everyone knows how much the Stadium of Light atmosphere can motivate the team.

Despite their improved form, Coventry will be a formidable opponent because they still have some road rust.

“It’s up to the crowd to get behind Beale and co but if they do, I’ll back the new boss to get off to a winning start.”

Sunderland vs Coventry City prediction: 2-1
