The South Sydney Rabbitohs have finalized their 30-man roster for the 2024
campaign; nevertheless, an English Warrington Wolves academy product is
included in the team’s train-and-trial deals.
The Rabbitohs had a dismal season in 2023; after winning only three of their
final ten games, they finished ninth in the standings after going from appearing
to be the early favorites to actually missing the playoffs.
Despite this, the Bunnies are still among the favorites for the next campaign
because they frequently make large purchases and have access to elite
players like Latrell Mitchell and just signed Jack Wighton.
You could even draw comparisons between Souths and Warrington Wolves,
especially now that Sam Burgess is in charge at Halliwell Jones Stadium and there’s a fresh connection.
The team announced its top 30 players and then revealed who will compete in
the New South Wales Cup as well as who is on a train-and-trial contract.
The most intriguing name is Aiden Doolan, a 20-year-old former academy
product of the Warrington Wolves who is on a train-and-trial agreement with the team.
Doolan signed a first team deal with the Wire in August 2022, joining other
academy products such Adam Holroyd, Leon Hayes, and Jake Thewlis, all of
whom saw action in the Super League in 2023.
The 20-year-old hooker provided some information on the Wire website with
the announcement of his first team contract in 2022.
“Aiden Doolan, a gifted Widnes native, joined Adam Holroyd’s Vikings after their Academy was dissolved in 2019.”
The junior from Halton Farmworth can play loose forward, hooker, or half-back
and will perform admirably in any of these roles.
With 11 appearances this season, the player of Lancashire descent has played an average of 60 minutes per game.
Along with being the team’s best tackler and having the most tackle victories, he
is also the utility player, averaging just under 1000 running meters.
With Billy Tsikrikas entering the team’s New South Wales Cup lineup, he’ll be
seeking to further establish himself down under with the Bunnies.
After playing a few games for the Castleford Tigers, Tsikrikas returned to
Australia to take advantage of the NSW Cup opportunity. Tsikrikas joined the
Tigers on loan late in the previous season as they
attempted to avoid relegation.
Although it seems doubtful, Doolan or Tsikrikas may make the starting lineup
because the Bunnies have only named 29 players to their current top 30.
