Can Chet Holmgren lead the league in blocks as a rookie?

OKC Thunder could see Chet Holmgren lead the league in blocks as a rookie.

Chet Holmgren, a rookie for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has been having a blast so far this season. He trails only Brook Lopez, who leads the league in both total blocks (83) and blocks per game (3.1), among the three players with 70 or more blocks.

Victor Wembanyama of the Spurs has played in one fewer game than Holmgren, hence he is ranking second in blocks per game (3.0), while Holmgren is in third place (2.8) with 71 blocks each.

Holmgren would be the first rookie to lead the league in blocks if he did, or Wembanyama, for that matter.

Holmgren leads the team in blocks this season with three, having had the most games with seven or more association at 9% of the block percentage.

The only other Thunder player to lead the league in blocks, if Holmgren succeeds, would be Serge Ibaka. Ibaka led the NBA in blocks four times when he was a member of the team: in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. Holmgren would be the first player drafted out of The University of Gonzaga to hold the shot-blocking title in addition to becoming the first rookie to lead the league in blocks.

Holmgren is all hands on deck

In the restricted region, Lopez is allowing 63.1 percent accuracy,

Wembanyama is allowing 67.5 percent, and Holmgren is allowing 60.0 percent accuracy.

Furthermore, opponents shoot 43.1 percent from the field while Holmgren is

on the court compared to 45.5 percent when he is off the court.

Opponents make 46.1% of their shots while Lopez is on the floor compared to

48.3% when he is on the bench. Teams shoot 48.2 percent when Wembanyama

is on the court and 50.3 percent when he is off the court.

Although Holmgren and Lopez play for more superior teams, the final set of

figures is perhaps unjust to Wembanyama, the numbers are still interesting to look at.

In the end, it is very exciting that not one, but two rookies have the chance to lead the league in blocks. That has never happened in 75 years, so even if it doesn’t work out, it will be interesting to watch the race between Holmgren, Wembanyama, and Lopez in the final contest between youth and experience.
