BARRANGGIRRA PARTICIPANT LEADING BY EXAMPLE FOR HER FAMILY AND COMMUNITY

Nicole Mason, a Souths Cares Barranggirra Program member, has been

putting a lot of effort into achieving her professional goals and supporting her

little family. Nicole completed her TAFE work ahead of schedule and started a

Health Administration Traineeship at Liverpool Hospital in March 2023.

Nicole worked in customer service and retail positions before starting her

traineeship. She was excited to join the health sector to advance her

administrative abilities and start a career with lots of room for growth. Nicole

applied for jobs in the healthcare industry for over three years before

being accepted into the Indigenous Traineeship Program of the South

Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD).

Nicole faced several obstacles during her Traineeship, including the fact that her second kid was only seven months old

when she began, that she moved twice in 2023, and that she needed a second job to

supplement her income while still receiving Trainee earnings.

Currently employed by Liverpool Hospital, Nicole’s daily responsibilities include managing files, collaborating

with nurses and ward staff, setting up appointments, and making sure patients

have all the resources they need before being released from the hospital.

Nicole is driven by her desire to give her family a better life and to set a positive example for her kids. She finished her

TAFE studies four months ahead of schedule thanks to her perseverance and

hard work, all the while managing her work placement, second job, daycare,

and being a devoted and caring mother to her one- and eight-year-old children.

Nicole expressed gratitude for the network of support that allowed her to

pursue her career goals and training with SWSLHD.

NICOLE MASON, HEALTH ADMINISTRATION TRAINEE

Some days I really struggled to push through but I got support when I needed it through my family, teachers, mentors

and colleagues. I will always be more grateful than they will ever know and I

wouldn’t have got this far without their generous support and belief in me.

Lowana Longbottom, Barranggirra Program Manager has been part of Nicole’s training journey throughout

2023 and explained Nicole was an inspiration to her family and community.

“Nicole’s resilience and work ethic is so inspiring. She has met every challenge

head on and has thrived in her Traineeship with SWSLHD”, Lowana said.

Nicole intends to transition to a full-time administrative position at Liverpool Hospital upon completion of her

traineeship early in the following year, where she will further her education and

career development in the medical field. After completing her traineeship, she

will receive further support from the

Barranggirra Program for six months to

help her smoothly move into the next phase of her career.

The Training Services NSW is pleased to assist the Souths Cares Barranggirra Program.
