Unbelievable:NFL insider predicts Falcons next head coach and quarterback, it’s astonishing
|NFL insider predicts Falcons next head coach and quarterback
After an incredibly humiliating loss to the 1-12 Panthers, the Falcons find themselves outside looking in for the playoffs.
It’s the kind of loss that causes heads to roll
One has already happened, and more might follow the season. With his
benching, Desmond Ridder’s chances of ever starting in the NFL again are
probably gone, barring an injury. Arthur Smith appears to be coaching for his
position throughout the following three weeks in the meanwhile.
Although it’s hard to see how hot it is inside the building, I believe Arthur Blank is trying to find any excuse not to
fire Smith. There will be a lot of pressure to select a franchise quarterback this
offseason and make noticeable gains if he is brought back in 2024.
It’s still possible that Smith doesn’t demonstrate his abilities during these next three games, in which case Arthur
Blank would have to return to the recruiting mix. However, your guess is
just as good as mine Smith will return in 2024, I think.
Albert Breer was asked in his mailbag who he thinks will be in Atlanta as the
head coach and quarterback next year.
Initially, he gave context to a situation that needed it because Falcons fans seem to forget where the club was a couple of years ago!
One, the first two years for Smith and GM Terry Fontenot were dedicated to laying a new, younger foundation and cleaning up the salary cap—the Falcons carried over $60 million in dead money in 2022, meaning more than a quarter of their cap space was dedicated to guys who weren’t playing for them. So this is the first real year in which Atlanta is clear of that retooling.
Second, it does feel like this team is a quarterback away, and I don’t conceptually disagree with how Smith
and Fontenot have approached it, which is to say they’d rather tread water at
quarterback than go all in on a guy they’re not all in on (that was the case
with quarterbacks in the draft, and Lamar Jackson last year). Basically, they
didn’t want to manufacture strong feelings for a quarterback, and risk
winding up with Christian Ponder in the first round.
I wholeheartedly concur with Breer’s evaluation and viewpoint of the Falcons’
quarterback search process, since too frequently teams select quarterbacks in
the draft as a result of ownership pressure. It is a regular occurrence.
However, the regime is currently in the same situation. Finding a franchise
quarterback will be under pressure if Smith is kept, which might lead to a
choice that neither Smith nor Fontenot are entirely in favor of.
The roster is ready to play, it simply needs someone to call the signals. Breer made his predictions regarding the
Falcons quarterback and head coach in 2024 after going on a long tirade about
the situation and legitimate concerns Blank is asking himself.
(To answer your question, I’ll go with Smith and a trade up for LSU’s Jayden Daniels.)
