“Sucker punch”: Luke O’Nien analyzes the disastrous Sunderland loss and explains what went wrong.

Luke O’Nien has his say on what really cost Sunderland in Coventry City defeat

Luke O’Nien has acknowledged that Sunderland’s defeat today was largely down to Coventry City’s early lead.

Michael Beale was anxious to start the Sunderland season on a positive note following his appointment as manager earlier this week.

Despite leading the Black Cats to a lackluster 3-0 loss at home, the 43-year-old left the field to a chorus of jeers.

Even though Sunderland wasn’t playing particularly well at the beginning of the game, things took a sharp turn for the worst when Coventry took the lead just before halftime.

After taking down an opponent, Luke O’Nien contributed to the awful defense by giving the Sky Blues the edge, which led to Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s first goal.

Although Sunderland played poorly overall and added two more goals in the second half, Luke O’Nien said that their downfall came from giving up a goal right before halftime.

In response to a question from the club media about what went wrong, the

captain responded, “Probably conceding right before half time.” We would be

better off if you ended the half with a score of 0-0. Teams seem to weary when

we’ve held it close until halftime. We possessed the ball and created numerous

opportunities, just like we did in the second half.

“It was somewhat of a sucker punch to concede there; they got in behind because they were a little too tight.” A

deflection that also did not go in our favor. We need to tighten up at the back

and take our chances, but I think we made a few mistakes today.

“These are the days that will teach us the most about the team and teach you the most about yourself. We have a debrief

and get ready for the next game, like every time nothing changes. We are a

decent team that is three points outside of the playoffs, and we haven’t exactly

been winning lately despite our recent strong play.

Should Luke O’Nien be dropped?

It’s nice of Luke O’Nien to admit that that first goal was costly, because it was mostly him that was at fault for it.

The defender actually looked pretty solid for most of the half, but that goal pretty

much summed up him as a player at the minute.

O’Nien appears to get away with such circumstances frequently, but this time he paid the price, and the scenario became much more serious as the second half progressed.

Michael Beale needs to start thinking about his role on the squad, even though

he is the captain and a really nice guy. Given his performance against Leeds

United, Jenson Seelt should definitely challenge O’Nien, and this week’s return

of Aji Alese to the U21 squad should provide more competition.
