Doubts about Howell’s future as the Commanders quarterback grow after his second benching.

IN RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSY — Sam Howell got the chance to allay some concerns about his potential to be the

quarterback of the future for the Washington Commanders.

It has only made them more intense, a second consecutive benching.

Jacoby Brissett took over for Howell in the third quarter of Sunday’s game. Brissett guided the Commanders on

three consecutive touchdown drives, helping Washington overcome a 20-point deficit and gain a late lead before the Jets

defeated them 30-28 on a 54-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein with five seconds remaining

Ron Rivera, the Commanders coach, said, “It was tough.” “We delayed assisting (Howell). We ought to have caught a few

of the balls that we dropped. There are moments when you may feel

unconfident. In the second half, that’s what I started to feel, and I was quite worried.

“I made the decision that I did for that reason.”

A week after being benched in Washington’s 28-20 loss to the Los

Angeles Rams, Howell most definitely didn’t help himself.

With Howell leading the NFL in interceptions coming into the game and

adding his 16th and 17th of the season against the Jets, Rivera stuck with him.

After being picked off for the second time, Howell was replaced by Brissett,

who completed 6 of 22 passes for 56 yards and a rating of 1.7.

Evidently, these past few weeks have been disappointing, Howell remarked. “I want to play football more effectively.

Ultimately, my only control is over my perspective, my disposition, and my course of action.

It remains to be seen, though, if the Commanders, who have now dropped six straight, will stick with Howell for

their final two games and beyond. For Washington’s game against San Francisco on Sunday, Rivera stated he

would”evaluate everything” and make a decision early in the week regarding his quarterback.

In his second NFL season, 23-year-old Howell declared, “I’m still a young player.” “I have to keep working toward

improvement and not allow this experience to define who I am as a person or as a player.”
