The Los Angeles Dodgers set the previous record for a luxury tax bill in 2015 when they paid $43.6 million on their $291.1 million payroll.
Thanks to their historic $245.9 million 2023 CBT payroll (per Fangraphs), the Atlanta Braves are making their first-ever tax payment. Atlanta’s projected 2024 roster is expected to be even more costly, with a $269 million CBT payroll (pending arbitration awards).
The Braves must send payment to the commissioner’s office by January 21st
The league will divide the $209.8 million in luxury tax fines among three parties,
according to MLB Trade Rumors. Player group benefits are paid for with the first $3.5 million. Unbelievably, baseball players have individual player
retirement accounts (401Ks). The remaining $103.15M is placed in a discretionary account for the commissioner’s distribution.
Recipients of revenue sharing who have increased their local revenues over the
previous few seasons—aside from any local broadcast or media deals—will get that money.
