NFC East standings: What Cowboys loss means for Eagles in race for divisional title

In the NFC East, there has never been a more pronounced divide between the haves and the have-nots than in 2023.

The Commanders and Giants are the teams at the bottom of the division; both have been destroyed by erratic quarterback play, dubious coaching choices, and a deficiency in personnel.

But that isn’t the case for the division’s top players. Overall, the Eagles and Cowboys have had fantastic seasons. For the most part of the year, their quarterbacks have come up in discussions about MVP. Additionally, it appears that they are performing well enough to continue even when they haven’t been playing well.

All of it has resulted in an exciting competition for the NFC East divisional

title. With a second home playoff match at stake,In one of the more divisive

divisions in the league, the race for first place is still very much alive.

So which team, Dallas or Philadelphia, will prevail in the end? Time will tell. However, an evaluation of the current NFC East rankings and an assessment of the upcoming schedule can assist in determining the course of events.

With that, here’s the latest look at the divisional standings in the NFC East.

NFC East standings

The Eagles regained control of first place in the NFC East after Dallas’ defeat to Miami on Sunday. They will maintain it at least up until their game against the Giants on Christmas Day, after which they will retain it with a win or tie.

The Cowboys still have a chance at the divisional crown, but they’ll need some help along the way; if Philadelphia wins out, it will be the Eagles who hoist the NFC East title.

Rank Team Record
1 Eagles 10-4
2 Cowboys 10-5
3 Giants 5-9
4 Commanders 3-11

Eagles remaining schedule

The Eagles will have a strong final-round schedule this year. They will play two games against the 5-9 Giants in between a home game against the lowly Cardinals.

With a combined strength of schedule that is only.302, Philadelphia ought to be able to put together a respectable final stretch of the season.

A look at their last three games of the season are shown below:

Week Team Record
16 vs. Giants 5-9
17 vs. Cardinals 3-13
18 at Giants 5-9

Three matchups against teams with losing records, and two at home? There are certainly worse places to be.

Given the challenging nature of (at least one) of the Cowboys’ last two games, perhaps that’s enough to get the Eagles an NFC East crown.

The Cowboys end their season with duels against the 11-4 Lions and 4-11 Commanders. It’s about as big of a paradox as one could imagine in the final two games of the year: dates with one of the league’s best and worst sides

Week Team Record
17 vs. Lions 11-4
18 at Commanders 4-11

This season, Dallas has performed admirably against playoff-caliber opponents, going 3-4 versus clubs that are above.500. A win over Detroit might have significant implications as Dallas aims to unseat the Lions for second place in the NFC and win the division title.

However, in order for that to occur, one of the Giants or the Cardinals must surprise Philly in the upcoming weeks.

The total strength of schedule for the teams the Cowboys will play against at the end of the season is.500. That is a far scarier proposition than what Philadelphia, their divisional opponents, have in store.
