- Due to the hectic fixture schedule, Beale has made small adjustments to his team’s tactics but hopes to fully implement his ideas soon, with players eager to make an impact.
Michael Beale has had a mixed start to life as the new Sunderland boss, with his side recording a home defeat to Coventry City prior to a first success under his guidance at fellow play-off hopefuls Hull City on Boxing Day afternoon.
After a cagey match at MKM Stadium, Jack Clarke’s Black Cats emerged victorious in the second half of the match. He eventually managed to cut in from the left before blasting a low effort past Matt Ingram in the Tigers net to give Wearside all three points.
Sunderland has stayed in or near the play-off picture despite the uncertainty surrounding the team before Beale was appointed, and this performance saw them pass the Tigers on goal differential and back into the top six.

The Wearsiders needed this road victory even more because it was their first since
they defeated Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on September 29.
Sunderland’s next game is back in Yorkshire against Rotherham United, who are now bottom of the division and
will be motivated after winning their first game under Leam Richardson at the
New York Stadium against Middlesbrough.
Back in August, Sunderland won the rematch 2-1 after a Jobe Bellingham
double completely changed the course of play.
“The big thing…” – Michael Beale issues challenge to his Sunderland side
After two hugely contrasting performances during his first week at the Stadium of Light, Beale has therefore challenged his new chargers to improve their consistency as the second tier enters the second half of the campaign.
Beale started through the Northern Echo, saying, “I’m absolutely delighted with the mentality and character the players showed.” “That is a big, big positive for me moving forward that they did that.”
For me right now, consistency is the most important thing. We’ve played ten games so far this season and have won ten, so it’s obvious that we can defeat anyone, but anyone can defeat us on a bad day. That’s a huge plus for the opening game of our second half of the season, if you will, but we need to support it at Rotherham.” He went on.
“I’ve got some…” – New boss reveals stance on implementing philosophy
As a result of the hectic fixture schedule that comes with this time of year in the Championship, the former Queens Park Rangers boss hasn’t had ample time on the training ground to fully implement his ideas, and therefore has opted to make small adjustments in between his two initial outings in the dugout.
“I’ve got some ideas coming in, but I’ve not had time to implement them,” Beale added. “There’s been a couple of small changes that people will start to see.
“As a coach, I sincerely hope the players seize their opportunity, but there is a line of players waiting in line to play for a new head coach.
“They believe they have better quality in a better area than what they have so far demonstrated to Sunderland supporters.” It’s a positive sign that so many individuals are eager to join and leap onto the field. He came to an end.
Sunderland dealt major injury blow
Whilst Beale will be pleased with the character his side showed in East Yorkshire heading into Friday night’s encounter against the Millers, the 43-year-old has been dealt a severe blow in his preparation for the game.
Full-back Niall Huggins will “undergo surgery after sustaining a significant knee injury,” Sunderland announced on their official X account on Thursday morning. Huggins was stretchered off with five minutes remaining in last Saturday’s home loss.
