Manchester City consider re-signing Aston Villa star in shock nine-figure transfer swoop

Douglas Luiz, who is about to enter the last two years of his current contract, is a

star for Aston Villa, and Manchester City is interested in signing him again for next summer.

Under Unai Emery, Aston Villa’s ascent has been rapid, with the Midlands

club making it to the UEFA Europa Conference

League semifinals and now sitting just three points behind Premier League

leaders Liverpool. The 25-year-old has been a key component of this success.

This season, Luiz has participated in 26 games for Villa, and the Brazil midfielder

has directly contributed to eight Premier League goals.

Two years after the Brazilian transferred from Vasco Da Gama to the Etihad

Stadium as a 19-year-old, Aston Villa paid £15 million to sign the midfield player from Manchester City in 2019.

Luiz, who never played for Manchester City in

the main squad, had a great loan

at Girona, a member of the City Football Group, before joining Villa Park, where Dean Smith was the manager.

The player’s Villa contract included buy-back and sell-on clauses added by

Manchester City. Although the latter is about to expire, Pep Guardiola’s team is

reportedly interested in re-signing the 25-year-old.

According to Football Insider, Manchester City is “strongly interested”

in re-signing the midfield player, but Arsenal is also showing interest. Last

year, the Gunners’ bids for the Brazilian were turned down multiple times.

Luiz, who has a contract with Villa Park through 2026, is still deciding on his long-

term future. Recent interest from Manchester City and Arsenal is said to have “turned his head.”

Jack Grealish, a former captain of Villa Park, was signed by Manchester City in 2021 for an unprecedented £100 million.

Since then, the Englishman has made 110 appearances for the Blues and won six

titles, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

A similar price tag is expected for any possible transfer involving Luiz next

summer, as Football Insider reports that Villa will seek a nine-figure amount to offload the Brazilian in 2024.
