Under-fire offensive coordinator Matt Nagy says Patrick Mahomes is “phenomenal” at keeping the Chiefs offense cohesive, but he acknowledges that the Raiders’ loss on Christmas Day marked new low: “You cannot avoid that.”

Matt Nagy, the tight offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, acknowledged that the team’s offensive

performance against the Las Vegas Raiders was lacking but commended quarterback Patrick Mahomes for his attitude off the field.

After every game, “winning and losing is all that matters to him,” Nagy said of

Mahomes. ‘You now enter the ‘why’ phase after a game loss. What took place? What caused it to occur?

Each and every play has certain variables. Sometimes it’s very evident,

and other times it’s noticed by people both inside and outside the building, including players.

The Chiefs’ 20-14 Christmas loss to the Raiders was one of their worst offensive displays in Mahomes’ six-year tenure.

Tight end Travis Kelce was so enraged by scenes on the Chiefs sideline that he slammed his helmet to the ground

during the game and ran into head coach Andy Reid, who tried to calm Kelce down.

Does he, or any quarterback, have enough time to throw the ball if there’s a

play where a guy is wide open? “Is there one guy out of the eleven breaking down?” Nagy asked.

Or is something happening differently if there is protection? What I’m trying to convey is that, in order for us to be

effective, we essentially want to do everything in our power to reach the point where players 11 and 12 as well as

us as coaches must truly work together. We’re pretty good when we accomplish that.

Mahomes is frustrated because he loses, which begs the question, “Why?” Why

are we being offensive, and how can we improve? The best part is that we

cooperate and seek solutions together. One of our biggest advantages is Pat, who is extremely skilled at it.

Nagy added that individuals within the Chiefs building promptly resumed their

efforts to improve upon their worst-of-the-season showing.

There’s just so much accountability with this group, with the players and coaches,” Nagy remarked.

The following day, we get together and begin discussing all of that. Without going into specifics, I believe that this

week has been really productive thus far in terms of working together and trying to come up with answers and solutions.

Ultimately, though, there are turnovers that result in points in a matter of seven

seconds and penalties; it’s all been the same old stuff.

That’s what we want to make sure [we] do, in my opinion: as staff, we want to make sure that we support these guys

and that they understand why we’re doing what we’re doing and how we improve at it.
