Shocking news:As Southampton are not in the rush to replace coach, they want to be patient with him

Southampton not rushing to replace set-piece coach Andreas Georgson

Manager Russell Martin has said that SAINTS do not intend to replace set-piece coach Andreas Georgson right away.

Georgson left Southampton earlier this month to become manager of Lillestrøm SK, a Norwegian team.

The Swede had comparable positions at Brentford and Arsenal before joining Saints in the summer.

Georgson’s job has been divided among the Staplewood backroom crew since his departure.

Martin said in an interview with the Daily Echo that it would be challenging for a new coach to enter the system midway through the season.

He declared: “Since joining, Andreas has performed incredibly well. Before he entered, there was no relationship between us.

“He established a few fundamental ideas and strong foundations for us to continue expanding upon. I was aware when he first came in that he didn’t want to be a set-piece coach for the rest of his life.

“He added a lot, he always had an opinion and he is a really good guy. We are disappointed to see him go, but it’s a great opportunity for him.

“We will take his work on for the next couple of weeks and not rush into anything. He goes with everyone’s best wishes.”

He continued: “The last thing we want to do is bring someone in straight away without really understanding them.

“To come in halfway through the season is difficult because they need to fit into what we do culturally and with the players.

“We are not going to change all the ideas because the set pieces have been really good and the players know the detail really well.

“For me, it’s not something that gets my juices going. It needs a different set of skills and I don’t find enjoyment in that area being completely honest.

“Matt Gill, who goes by Gilly, has already done them. Colin Calderwood has previously performed them. Carl Martin is also present.

“I’m not concerned about our ability to handle that. We’ll then determine if we have the right individual for the job or whether someone else has to come in.”
