Transfer update news:Russell Martin hoping Southampton can keep their Star player in January

Russell Martin hoping Southampton can keep Che Adams in January

Russell Martin, the manager of SAINTS, acknowledged that he anticipates a lot of

interest in the forward but is trying to keep Che Adams in January.

The 27-year-old Adams is nearing the end of his contract and, should he choose

not to sign an extension, he will be free to walk away in the summer.

In September, the Daily Echo asked the Scottish

international about his future, but he refrained from answering directly.

Since then, the forward who previously played for Sheffield United and

Birmingham has scored three goals, including two in his last two games.

As the January transfer window draws near, Adams has been connected to a return to the Premier League.

When asked if Adams might leave in January, Martin responded, “I hope we

keep him because he is a really good player and a good human being.”

It’s good that he’s been playing a little more freely lately. He cares and is highly perceptive.

“He has a certain way he wants to be perceived. He is a fantastic individual who gives his all while training.

Because he cares, it does affect him greatly when he doesn’t play or doesn’t

score. Restoring him to a position where he can carry out his duties is the goal.

“There are a lot of variables at play. He still has six months left on his contract,

and his quality will make him appealing to a lot of people.

If an offer comes in that is too excellent for them to turn down, I’m sure his

agency will have one opinion of it, I’ve got one, and the ownership will have another.

“I am unable to provide a clear response, but if he is here at the end of the

timeframe, we are ready for whatever happens. If not, we will have found a replacement by then.

Southampton’s CEO Phil Parsons recently revealed that the board will not “gamble

the future of the club” ahead of the transfer window opening.

He told the club media: “In the new year myself, Russell (Martin), Jason (Wilcox)

and our owners, Sport Republic, will all be trying to keep the squad as stable as

possible to keep the momentum going in the right direction.

“We will continue to make sure the club is financially safe and won’t gamble the

future of the club by spending over the odds on players, especially given the constraints of Financial Fair Play.”

Speaking on Friday, Martin added: “We are prepared. The wheels are truly in motion for what we are trying to do.

“I don’t believe you’re capable of much more. The rest focuses on the other teams and any moves in this area.

“Over the past two months, we’ve put in a lot of hours trying to get ready for what’s coming up.”

Martin was unequivocal in his response when asked if Southampton will be able

to bring back any of the players who are presently on loan: “No, I don’t think so.”
