After beating Bama, Michigan (somehow) falls from the top of ESPN’s SP+ rankings

Michigan defeated Alabama in the Rose Bowl on Monday, 27-20, ultimately driving out the College Football Playoff demons. The victory sets up what should

be a fantastic matchup with Washington in the National Championship. The Wolverines lost favor in the most recent ESPN and Bill Connelly’s SP+ rankings, despite the significant victory.Connelly defines SP+ as “a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency” for those of you who may be unfamiliar with it this season and

haven’t followed along. By projecting the margin of victory (or defeat) between a team and the “average” college football team, the metric can be used as an alternative method of ranking college football teams. It considers a team’s

efficiency on offense, defense, and special teams. For instance, Michigan’s rating after the Rose Bowl is 31.0, which indicates that on a neutral field, the Wolverines should defeat a “average” college football team by 31 points.

An updated ranking was released after bowl season and the College Football Playoff semifinals, and the Georgia Bulldogs were once again ranked as the

top team in the country. After holding the top spot since Week 4, the Wolverines dropped to No. 2.The 13-1 Bulldogs take the top spot following their lopsided 63-3 victory over a hapless Florida State team in the Orange Bowl. With a rating of 31.2, Georgia is only 0.2 points better than Michigan.

Positively, SP+ said that Michigan’s defense remained the best in the country when examining the individual efficiency metrics. Not shocking at all considering how it played against

Alabama. But the special teams fell from No. 4 to No. 7, and the offense fell from

No. 10 to No. 12.With the National Championship approaching, Michigan still has a significant lead over

Washington. Despite a perfect 14-0 record and an outstanding resume, the Huskies were ranked No. 12 in the rankings. With Washington’s rating of 18.8, Michigan should have no trouble defeating Washington on Monday in Houston on a neutral field.
