LORAN SMITH: SPRING TRAINING FOLLOWS WINTER WORKOUT FOR THE ORANGE BOWL CHAMPS

LORAN SMITH: SPRING TRAINING FOLLOWS WINTER WORKOUT FOR THE ORANGE BOWL CHAMPS

The Georgia football team will temporarily enter winter workouts after yet another thrilling and successful season. There will be a few days off before classes start, and then winter exercise.

Surprisingly, for various reasons, it has always been that way. Because it is important to their ultimate goal of playing in the National Football League, players buy into today’s routine. The Orange bowls of 1939 and 1942 are two historical vignettes that I am sure will make you stop and think for a moment.

Officials from the Orange Bowl strongly persuaded Oklahoma to travel to Miami in 1939. Compared to their opponent, Tennessee, the Sooners were greatly favored.Even though there was no television back then, this Orange Bowl game was one of the most anticipated in memory. The claim that the game “made” the Orange Bowl has been around for a while.Tennessee was a team that used its exceptional speed to upset Oklahoma. Although Tennessee’s players were smaller than those of the Sooners, they were faster. Volunteers prevailed 17 to 0.

After the game, Orange Bowl officials were ecstatic—not because they had a soft spot for Gen. Robert Neyland’s boys, per se, but rather because they knew the

publicity would help their cause.Neyland was an adherent of the traditional jaw-to-jaw method. Though he was obviously happy with the outcome, which saw his team shut out Tennessee, he remained quiet in the winning locker room.

He told his cheering squad, “I am damn well pleased with the result,” but he also said, “Be ready to report for spring practice, Jan. 15.” The players’ private remarks are not documented, but it seems reasonable to assume that they

disapproved of the General’s order.Georgia played in Miami for the Bulldogs’ inaugural bowl game two years later, winning 40–26 over Texas

Christian. At halftime, the game was all but over, with tailback Frank Sinkwich having the best day—at least in terms of statistics. With 365 yards, he set an

Orange Bowl record for total offense that stood for many years. The town began to talk about him. Sinkwich noticed a note on the bulletin board when she arrived at the dormitory when classes for the winter quarter started. In two weeks is the start of spring practice.

Sinkwich remarked, “Not me.” He thus resigned, which created chaos in the residence halls and gym. not to mention the depression that struck the Athens

community. Later on, Sinkwich

took back his statement and won the Heisman Trophy.Back then, it was customary to practice all through the academic year.

The team started scrimmaging in August and kept up until the end of the spring quarter in May.In this “NFL or bust” era, players today aspire to grow larger,

stronger, and faster, and they can achieve this. In college football, having top-notch player development has become a recruiting advantage, and Georgia offers some of the best.

You can, with prudent and economical choices, amass enough money to live happily ever after and take advantage of limitless perks and benefits if you make it into the NFL and spend a significant amount of money in the professional ranks.Professional athletes have incredible opportunities and a remarkable lifestyle, but something is missing from all of this. An athlete loses out on something unique if he doesn’t take the time to enjoy being on campus.

That ought to be one of the main motivations for joining this venerable game.
