Michael Beale confirms Sunderland transfer talks – and outlines plans for January

Sunderland has identified the “one or two” areas they will be aiming to
improve during the transfer season. MICHAEL BEALE has been involved in recruitment discussions this week.
The first few weeks of Beale’s tenure on Wearside have been somewhat hectic, as the Black Cats played four games in ten
days during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
This week will not be slowing down, as anticipation for the first Wear-Tyne
derby in nearly eight years grows closer to Saturday’s match at the Stadium of Light.
However, Beale has found time to meet with the other members of Sunderland’s
recruitment staff in between the match preparation.
And with sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman, leading the way, there is a
determination to strengthen in a couple of key areas this month.
“We spoke about the January window in our initial meetings, and it has been
ongoing,” said Beale. “Stuart Harvey, the head of recruitment, is someone I was
familiar with before I came in, and the recruitment here is done by a number of
us getting together in a room and discussing the options that we have.
“We have a clear idea on one or two of the areas we would like to strengthen this month, if we can. It’s never an easy
month, but we are certainly going to try and do something to strengthen and
boost the squad, and to hopefully excite the fans.
“Those discussions are going on in the background. This (derby) game has been
a bit of a distraction, if I’m honest, but those discussions were happening even
(Tuesday) morning and late on in the afternoon.”
Beale does not want to be very specific about the potential timing for January
agreements, even if targets have been identified and, in some cases, preliminary talks have taken place.
The head coach has acknowledged that nothing is urgent, though, and stated that
his only emphasis for the next few days would be on getting ready for the FA Cup matchup with Newcastle.
He remarked, “I think everyone is to-ing and
fro-ing a little bit.” “There have been
numerous conversations, but nothing firm as of yet, so I wouldn’t want to set a
deadline and let people down, or be accused of deceiving them if it happens a
little sooner. Currently, though, nothing significant is approaching.
