Stoke City, who lost to Robert De Zerbi’s team in the FA Cup last season, will be
looking for revenge when they play Brighton & Hove Albion again.
Steven Schumacher will be hoping for a significant victory to fully launch his
managerial career at Stoke City when they play Brighton & Hove Albion on
Saturday. Under the new coach’s direction, the team has started the season undefeated with one victory and
three draws, including a fantastic performance against Ipswich Town, who are vying for promotion.
Stoke City was reduced to ten men when Jordan Thompson was given a second yellow card for dissent. However, they
had enough ground to win a point against the Tractor Boys. Schumacher will be concerned about the outcomes
given that his team is currently languishing in 19th place, but he will be hoping for a turnaround going forward.
Stoke City’s recent record against Premier League opponents is not great;
in their last eight FA Cup encounters, they have lost to them. However, they will enter this home game intending to
exact revenge on Brighton, who they were unable to defeat in their FA Cup fifth-round matchup with last season.
Roberto De Zerbi will want Brighton to advance in the FA Cup a little further than their semi-final finish from the
previous year. They had a strong run in the competition the previous season, even defeating Liverpool before falling
to Manchester United in the semifinals on penalties.
This season, De Zerbi’s team has not yet
reached its peak because there are many doubts regarding their consistency and form. Following an impressive 4-2
victory over Tottenham to close out 2023, the Seagulls could only muster a fun goalless draw with West Ham United
Aside from the victory from the previous season, they have lost nine and drawn eight of their previous 17 games against the Potters.
Right now, Steven Schumacher doesn’t have many issues with his fitness to worry about. But because Thompson is
suspended, he will miss him. Tyrese Campbell is also a question mark going into this FA Cup matchup with Brighton.
Enda Stevens and Josh Laurent remain doubtful, and Lynden Gooch may be
evaluated prior to the game to determine whether or not he will play. Schumacher
also has additional issues at the back, so he’ll be hoping Gooch is well and available to treat them.
Tommy Simkin, a teenage goalkeeper, is still unavailable because he was cup-tied
during his loan stint with Solihull Moors earlier in the season. Due to Junior
Tchamadeu’s commitment to Cameroon at the AFCON, Schumacher will be without his right-back. As a result, the
manager plans to start Gooch on the other side and left-back Ki-Jana Hoever on the right flank.
With Wouter Burger and Lewis Baker positioned on either side of him, Daniel
Johnson is still the most suitable choice to start at the base of the midfield in place of Thompson. Ryan Mmaee is
expected to lead the line in the front three, with Andre Vidigal and Bae Jun-ho providing support from wide areas.
Roberto De Zerbi would have preferred to heavily rotate his team for this cup
competition. However, absences and injuries might force him to include some well-known players in his starting
lineup. Despite having a problem with her ankle, Kaoru Mitoma has traveled with Japan
While some players, like Pervis Estupinan and Jack Hinshelwood, will remain in the starting lineup, some of
the long list of seriously injured stars will undoubtedly miss this trip to Stoke City. De Zerbi may still be able to rearrange
his lineup a little, which would allow him to bench Jan Paul van Hecke in favor of Adam Webster
Jakub Moder, who just got back, will want to get started. De Zerbi, though, will continue to exercise caution even though
he will probably start from the bench at some point. Mahmoud Dahoud and Carlos Baleba are probably going to
form. Double pivot in the middle of the pitch, with Adam Lallana contributing his experience in the No. 10 position.
Alternatively, De Zerbi may choose to play Lallana in a midfield three since he
is without his reliable wingers. Facundo Buonanotte might then be able to play a
more centrally advanced role behind the strikers as a result. Danny Welbeck and Evan Ferguson, who scored the game-
winning goal against Stoke the previous season, could start together as the strike partners.
