Southampton working to sign “unbelievable” new player for Russell Martin

Fabrizio Romano says Saints are “pushing to sign” him.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an intriguing update, stating that Southampton is “pushing to sign” a “unbelievable” Premier League star.

Southampton transfer news

The January transfer window gives Saints a great opportunity to bolster their squad, should Russell Martin feel that fresh faces are required to make a big

difference. The south coast club have enjoyed a positive first half of the season,

sitting third in the Championship table and now only three points adrift of

Ipswich Town in the second automatic promotion spot.

Given the number of players who have been connected to moves to St Mary’s in

the upcoming weeks, Southampton does seem to be in the running to finish some

significant business before the month ends. After returning from a short loan

at Bristol Rovers, teenage defender Lamare Bogarde of Aston Villa has

become a main target for a loan, and young defender Fabio Carvalho of

Liverpool is another player who might be added.

The offensive midfielder, who joined RB Leipzig in the summer, has struggled

during his loan spell there. However, Jurgen Klopp may be eager to send him

elsewhere for the rest of the season in order to boost his confidence once more.

Southampton “pushing to sign” Fabio Carvalho

According to Romano on X, Southampton are interested in signing Liverpool

attacker Carvalho this month, but other EFL clubs are also keen on snapping him up.

“In the coming days, Liverpool will choose which loan option is ideal for Fábio Carvalho. Leeds, Southampton, and Hull City are all vying for his signature; Wolves has also expressed interest in Fabio, but game time assurances are crucial.”

Carvalho has the individual talent to win the Championship promotion battle, which makes him a potential great addition for Southampton in January. Granted, the 21-year-old struggled at Leipzig and hasn’t performed well at Liverpool since joining from Fulham in 2022, but Klopp has said the following about him in the past:

“I have to say that Fabio is kind of a role model for how he handles the circumstances he finds himself in—that is, being involved in training on an entirely new level while still receiving intense training. Even if he is not content with the circumstances, he never gives up. It’s astounding.”

It speaks a lot about Carvalho’s caliber to be praised by one of the greatest managers in the world, and he would enjoy returning to the Championship after excelling there for Fulham in 2021–2022, where he recorded 10 goals and eight assists.

Given how his play has been lately, the Portuguese will undoubtedly feel that he needs to prove something. Since Liverpool appears willing to allow him to go on loan once more in January, a team of Saints’ caliber that is vying for promotion seems ideal for him, allowing him to relish being a main man once more.
