In a Loaded Western Conference, Thunder Can’t Fall Behind

In a loaded Western Conference, Oklahoma City has no time to waste. The standings look good at the moment with the Thunder sitting at No. 2, but another loss or two could completely change the outlook of things. In all reality, this is one of the best conference’s we’ve ever seen from top to bottom. A lot can happen between now and the end of the season, but there could very well be six or seven 50-win teams. Oklahoma City is slated to be one of them, but taking care of business in winnable games will be key down the stretch — and especially in

January. The Thunder will play 17 games and five back-to-backs this month. Losses

against teams like the Nets and Hawks — who got the best of the Thunder last

week — can’t happen anymore. As it stands, seven teams have over 20 wins in

the Western Conference. Nine teams have a winning record. And sitting on

the outside looking in? The LeBron James led Lakers fresh off a conference finals

appearance and Steph Curry and the Warriors who won the Finals in 2022.

Things could heat up in a hurry with two proven teams lurking.

That being said, Oklahoma City cannot afford to take chances. Given that they are the second-youngest NBA club, they

already have a disadvantage in terms of postseason experience and players with

track records of success. Coming up with a winning strategy in January will be

crucial by April. Oklahoma City’s games this month against Washington, Portland,

Detroit, San Antonio, and Utah present a great chance for them to continue their

exceptional season. While it is unrealistic to expect this club to win every game, a

good team like the Thunder should be able to handle the bottom feeders.

Despite the two consecutive lackluster losses, Oklahoma City has undoubtedly

had a fantastic start to the season. In actuality, though, they are only three

games behind the seventh spot and two more losses away from the play-in

round. It’s time to get over the setbacks and move forward.
