Sekou Mara will not be departing St Mary’s this month, according to his boss Russell Martin.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Southampton striker Sekou Mara won’t be leaving the club during the January transfer window.
- Mara has had limited game time this season but has impressed Martin with his performance against Walsall.
- With the injury to Ross Stewart, Mara should be retained as a young asset who can improve and potentially become a long-term replacement for Che Adams.
Sekou Mara of Southampton has admitted to Russell Martin that he will not be leaving the team during the
January transfer window, according to the Daily Echo.
Mara has made 16 appearances in all competitions so far this season, but has
struggled to get game time for a good portion of the year.
Despite being a consistent member of Martin’s matchday teams, he has mostly
appeared from the bench or as an unutilized replacement this season.
Ross Stewart has missed a large portion of the season due to injury, although his playing time has been restricted.
In light of this, it appears unlikely that the Frenchman will start many games before the season is out.
The Saints have occasionally benefited greatly from Che Adams, while Adam Armstrong has been a great asset for Martin. Together, they have helped to minimize Mara’s playing time.
Given that a few strikers left St Mary’s on loan during the summer, Mara probably felt confident about playing frequently this season, but the Frenchman hasn’t seen much success from it.

Russell Martin’s stance on Sekou Mara
It wouldn’t have been shocking to see the striker depart, given he has been linked to Ligue 1 team Lille. The Saints were willing to cash in on players during the previous window.
However, Martin has ruled out the 21-year-old leaving this month.
“He’s not going anywhere, no,” he declared. That would be insane, am I right?
“He is an amazing athlete, a skilled technical, and a fantastic football player.
His performance versus Walsall was excellent.
“I really rate Sekou and he has not had a huge amount of minutes, but he is
coming more to the fore now and forcing his way into the reckoning.”
Sekou Mara should be retained by Southampton
With Stewart likely to be out for the rest of the season, Mara needs to be retained.
Although they could bring in a replacement, he’s a young asset who will only get better.
His contract doesn’t expire until 2026 either and the Saints generated plenty of money from sales in the summer, so selling him now wouldn’t make sense.
He might wind up playing as Adams’ long-term replacement at age 21 when his contract expires in 2024.
Mara ought to get more playing time in the upcoming months if the Scotland international is unable to sign a contract.
