The Detroit Lions will probably select in the later half of the first round of the
upcoming NFL Draft, given their performance in the regular season of 2023 and their potential for success in
the postseason. On the defensive end of the ball, Detroit will need players at cornerback, along with depth on the
inside of the defensive line and a pass rusher to support Aidan Hutchinson. Because of Hutchinson’s inconsistent
pass rush throughout the season, Aaron Glenn’s defense missed having James Houston opposite him.
Houston made his debut on Thanksgiving of the previous season and
quickly gained notoriety, recording eight sacks. Draft analyst Jordan Reid of ESPN has the Lions selecting edge rusher
Bralen Trice of the Washington Huskies at No. 28 overall in his most recent mock draft.
The Lions’ physicality, toughness, and relentlessness are the cornerstones of their culture. Trice is the only prospect in
this class who has all three boxes checked. Power is the foundation of his game, and this season, he generated first
pressure on an FBS-high 71 plays,” writes Reid. With seven sacks in 2023, he could act as Aidan Hutchinson’s
complementary pass-rusher, keeping James Houston fresh in a designated
pass-rushing role once healthy. “Trice also never comes off the field, with a
level of effort sure to catch the eyes of GM Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell.”
For the second straight season, Trice received the Defensive Most Valuable
Player award at the team’s postseason awards banquet. The Huskies had a successful run in the College Football
Playoffs, but on Monday night at NRG Stadium, they were defeated 34–13 by the Michigan Wolverines.
