The best deal is sometimes the one you choose not to make.
The Atlanta Braves offered the Chicago White Sox a multiple player package that included infielder Vaughn Grissom, but
Chicago wanted more, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, writing about White Sox starter Dylan Cease.
According to Rogers, the conversations took place before and after the late-night
trade of Aaron Bummer, in which the Atlanta Braves sent a five-player package to acquire the left-handed reliever.
Earlier in the offseason, the Cincinnati Reds showed interest in the White Sox,
and White Sox General Manager Chris Gaetz reportedly asked for a package
that included Connor Phillips, Edwin Arroyo, Chase Petty, Rhett Lowder, and an unidentified prospect.
Hurston Waldrep, AJ Smith-Shawver, Spencer Schwellenbach, JR Ritchie, Owen
Murphy, and another pitcher would have likely been needed in at least three of the group’s packages from Atlanta, counting
Grissom as one of the top prospects. Waldrep and Smith-Shawver would have been necessary additions to the package.
With two seasons remaining under team control before becoming a free agent in
2026, Cease is expected to earn $8.8 million this season in arbitration.
Rather, Atlanta made a smart turn and struck a deal with Boston to get Chris
Sale for just Grissom. With the $17 million that the Red Sox are contributing as well as the recent extension that Sale
inked, Sale will only cost $22 million in salary for two seasons of control before becoming a free agent in 2026
Additionally, should Sale leave in free agency, Atlanta will have both Smith-
Shawver and Waldrep in the rotation to replace him, unlike with a deal for Cease.
