CEO of the team claims the 46-year-old has a “runway to make long-term decisions.”

General manager Alex Anthopoulos of Atlanta has agreed to a contract

extension that will keep him with the six-time defending National League East champions through the 2031 campaign.

The team locked up the general manager who oversaw a World Series championship in 2021 and was in charge

of negotiating long-term contracts with numerous elite players when they announced the deal on Friday.

2018 saw Atlanta start its run of division titles under Anthopoulos’ direction. The

team finished the previous season with an impressive league-best 104 wins

before losing to Philadelphia in the NL Division Series for the second consecutive year.

The extension, according to team CEO Terry McGuirk, gives Anthopoulos “the runway to make long-term decisions and

the opportunity to continue his track record of assembling teams that are perennial contenders.”

“I have the utmost confidence in his ability to deliver championship baseball for our fans well into the future,” McGuirk stated.

“I’ve had a great working relationship with Alex, and I hope to have that for

many years to come. I’ve been in this game for a very long time, so I’m aware

of how exceptional Alex’s success has been. In the industry, there is just no one better.”

McGuirk received gratitude from 46-year-old Anthopoulos “for his continued support and trust.”

In a statement, Anthopoulos said, “I’m proud of the success we’ve achieved

together and the Braves are an incredible organization to be a part of.” “I am grateful for the opportunity to

continue to lead baseball operations and to strive to bring another World Series to Atlanta.”

His prior deal with Atlanta, which was set to expire in 2024, was first disclosed in February 2020.

With this roster, Anthopoulos seems to be building for the long term. The team’s

core, led by NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr., has inked multi-year contracts, many of which are very advantageous to the group.

Acuna, who last season became the first player in MLB history to record 40 home

runs and 70 stolen bases, may remain in Atlanta through 2028 thanks to a club

option in his contract. Some have been with the team for even longer, such as catcher Sean Murphy, starting pitcher

Spencer Strider, first baseman Matt Olson, third baseman Austin Riley, and center fielder Michael Harris II.

Anthopoulos garnered recognition for his actions prior to the 2021 trade

deadline, as they effectively provided Atlanta with an entirely new outfield at a minimal expense. Joc Pedersen, Adam

Duvall, Eddie Rosario, and Jorge Soler were crucial players in the team’s first World Series victory since 1995.

Anthopoulos was general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays for six seasons and

vice president of baseball operations for the Los Angeles Dodgers for two seasons prior to joining the Braves.
