Reports: Wesley McGriff to return to Auburn after being announced as addition to TAMU’s staff

PaymentsHistory

On December 31, rumors circulated that Wesley McGriff, the secondary coach at Auburn, would be a part of Mike Elko’s first class at Texas A&M.

On January 3, Texas A&M formally declared McGriff’s hiring, designating

him as the Aggies’ coordinator of the passing game and defensive backs coach.

However, as word spread that McGriff would be making a comeback on Friday,

the relocation to College Station came to an abrupt end.

The news was initially reported by Justin Hokanson of On3 Sports on Friday

afternoon. Hokanson also mentioned that McGriff will be returning to The Plains to coach Auburn’s defensive backs.

“McGriff left Auburn for Texas A&M the day after the Music City Bowl, but never fully executed his contract,” Hokanson wrote in a post on X, the social site formerly known as Twitter.

Four days after Ron Roberts abandoned Auburn to move to Florida as defensive coordinator for the 2023 season, McGriff is reportedly returning to the university.

Following Roberts’ exit, Hokanson stated that Roberts’ “no non-sense style caused

some issues internally,” citing this as the reason McGriff left his on-field position in the middle of Auburn’s season.

Wesley McGriff, the former defensive backs coach at Auburn, left his position

on the field in the middle of the season after having several arguments with Roberts, according to Hokanson.

Head coach Hugh Freeze informed reporters on October 23 that McGriff stayed involved in the Auburn program and was assisting with internal recruitment while he was not playing on the field.

After Auburn’s season ended and Roberts was still employed, McGriff considered his options and finally joined Elko’s College Station staff.

But now that Roberts is no longer there, it seems McGriff is back in.

On December 23, 2022, McGriff became the first employee of Hugh Freeze at Auburn. This was his third employment at Auburn. Prior to this, McGriff led the Tigers in 2016 and 2019–20.

Before coming on board with Freeze’s staff a year ago, McGriff served as Louisville’s 2022 defensive secondary coach. Additionally, McGriff has worked at Florida, Ole Miss, Miami, Baylor, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt among others.
