2 in, Adams out: Southampton FC transfers we predict to happen before February 1st

We have predicted three transfers that could potentially happen at St Mary’s before the end of the month.

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Southampton’s strong form in the Championship puts them in contention for automatic promotion, just three points off second place.
  •  Che Adams may leave Southampton in the January transfer window as his contract expires in the summer and he has limited playing time.
  •  Southampton are targeting Bournemouth’s David Brooks and Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland as potential signings to strengthen their attacking options.

Southampton’s first season back in the Championship has gotten off to a fantastic start.

They were demoted after finishing last season in the lowest spot after 11 seasons in the Premier League.

After a difficult beginning, former Swansea City manager Russell Martin took over in the summer and led them to an 18-game winning streak in the second division.

They are now only three points behind Ipswich Town, who are in second place,

and very close to the automatic promotion spots thanks to their current record.

Championship Table (As it stands January 9th)
Team P GD Pts
1 Leicester City 26 36 65
2 Ipswich Town 26 15 55
3 Southampton 26 15 52
4 Leeds United 26 20 48
5 West Brom 26 12 42
6 Sunderland 26 8 40
7 Hull City 26 4 39
8 Coventry City 26 10 37

Saints need reinforcements if they are to finish in the top two and make a return trip to the Premier League this season, as the competition for promotion heats up in the second half of the season.

Anticipating a potentially hectic January transfer window, we examine two potential additions and one potential departure this month.

Out: Che Adams

During the summer transfer window, there was a lot of conjecture about Che Adams, with Everton and Wolves of the Premier League being mentioned as potential destinations.

Wolves may still be one of the three or four teams hoping to sign Adams during this transfer window, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Adams has only started ten of the Saints’ 26 league games this season, which is less playing time than he would have anticipated at the beginning of the season.

It would be prudent for Saints to cash in while they can for a striker who is obviously more of a backup because his contract is likely to expire in the summer.

In: David Brooks

A player who can play on either wing or in center offensive midfield would be ideal for Southampton to add to their attacking options behind the striker.

Saints have moved on to other targets after failing in their attempts to sign Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho, who appears to be joining Hull City, and Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, who appears to be staying at Old Trafford this season.

According to TalkSport’s Alex Crook, Bournemouth’s David Brooks is now in their sights.

With the Cherries, the Wales international has had a difficult time getting into the lineup this year. Of his 12 appearances, only two have been starts.

Brooks’ game time at Bournemouth is restricted, therefore it makes sense for him to move up the south coast to St Mary’s, where he would be a wonderful creative addition.

In: Lawrence Shankland

With Adams rumoured to be leaving, Saints may need to add to their striking department.

According to HITC, Southampton, along with Hull City and Middlesbrough, are interested in signing Lawrence Shankland from Hearts. He is currently the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership, scoring 13 goals in 21 games.

His form has caught the attention of several clubs in England, but with his contract not due to expire until 2025, Hearts may hold firm in trying to get themselves a good fee for their star man.

But if Saints are serious, signing Shankland would be a massive statement to the rest of the division.
