Sheffield Wednesday’s manager explains why Southampton was so “difficult” he said…..
|Danny Rohl lists why Southampton are in a ‘different league’ to Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton are in a “wholly different league,” according to Danny Rohl.
During their trip to the south coast yesterday, Sheffield Wednesday conceded four goals and were left with injuries.
The Owls had gained six wins from their last ten games in all competitions and had scored seven in their last two, but they looked completely off the pace as they were smashed by Russell Martin’s side.
At St. Mary’s Stadium, the visitors only had 29% of the possession, and several
defensive blunders denied them the opportunity to score even one point.
In response to the “tough” matchup with the recently demoted Saints, Danny Rohl
has since acknowledged that their disparity in caliber contributed significantly to the loss.
Speaking to The Star, he said: “It was hard, very deserved for Southampton who played well. In such a game you have to perform very well with no mistakes and to take everything you can get to take something here. After 30 seconds we immediately had a good pressing situation but they had good ball possession, a lot of movement between the lines, give and go and it was difficult to press.
“In the second half we changed the shape to adapt. There were moments it was not so bad from our side, we had moments to
create something, we had the chance for a 1-1 but if you take the wrong decision
or your rest defence is not well then they will score very well. At the end in such a
game you have to be ready. It was difficult.
“To be honest, looking at their roster, this team (Southampton) is in a different league than us. Their players are
excellent, and their objectives diverge from ours. While they want to return to
the Premier League, we want to remain in the league.
It was obvious that I did not want to come here and park the bus. We want to be bold and take action, but it is not who
we are. It was insufficient, therefore we must learn from it, do better, and go on.
The difference in quality
After eleven seasons in the Premier League, Southampton was only demoted last season.
They only spent almost £70 million on players in the summer before they were
relegated, hoping to strengthen their team, but they ended up finishing in 20th position.
Sheffield Wednesday’s team, meanwhile, was acquired for pennies on the dollar,
and during the previous five years, The Owls had hardly spent £5 million.
Even though it was evident how different the two teams were from one another,
some of the subpar performances from yesterday cannot be overlooked.
