The Saints manager outlines what truly struck him about Sheffield Wednesday, saying, “We prepared for that.”

Sheffield Wednesday told they were absolutely ‘relentless’ in Southampton loss

Russell Martin, the manager of Southampton, praised Sheffield Wednesday following their loss on the south coast.

Sheffield Wednesday’s triumphant performance on Saturday was short-lived as they were humiliated 4-0 by Southampton.

The Owls entered the game riding a three-game winning streak across all categories, but they were playing a newly demoted team that hadn’t dropped a game since September.

When Danny Rohl changed his starting lineup, many questioned why he moved Di’Shon Bernard into midfield and reinstated Bambo Diaby.

His tactical choices were obviously ineffective, though, as several defensive blunders led to a crushing defeat at St. Mary’s Stadium.

With more than twice as many shots as The Owls, Southampton dominated the field and held a commanding 71% of the ball during the Championship match.

Rohl’s side had only three corners, 77% pass accuracy and 294 passes, and have

now given QPR the potential to leapfrog them into today’s clash with Watford.

Russell Martin was eager to commend Sheffield Wednesday despite their forgettable day.

“We did have two or three moments in the game that we shouldn’t have done, and a big moment scared us into life at the start of the game,” the Southampton manager stated in a post-match statement. I applaud the boys for their bravery in figuring things out. Sheffield Wednesday developed into such an aggressive team and were unrelenting.

“We prepared for that and I thought the guys were brilliant. The players are really in flow, they run relentlessly for each other and press so well. Wednesday tried to play today and we stole the ball so many times and looked like a real threat on the regain.”

Is it something to be concerned about?

Sheffield Wednesday have been very much on the up since the start of December, but it was a very disappointing performance today.

There is no doubting the gap between the two teams, which the players were unable to significantly close, even if The Owls were mostly to blame for the loss.

The market value of Southampton’s starting lineup for this weekend is estimated by transfermarkt to be about £101 million, with attackers Adam Armstrong and Che Adams costing a combined £30 million.

Sheffield Wednesday’s lineup is only valued £5 million, which is less than the

individual values of the majority of Southampton’s players. Actually, only

three players—Di’Shon Bernard, Ike Ugbo, and James Beadle—are worth

seven figures, and The Owls only own one of them.

The Yorkshire team had a really difficult day, but they can undoubtedly learn from it and move on.
