Dyche discusses the Everton sanctions in “Strange Situation”

Tomorrow is Everton’s FA Cup return to action, as they host Crystal Palace. This is

a replay of the Blues’ Third Round match, which ended in a scoreless draw away at Selhurst Park and an incorrect red card

for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Though they arguably also lost a chance to win a game they had largely controlled up until

that point, the Blues were fortunate to hold on despite being shorthanded by one player.

The winner of tomorrow’s game advances to the Fourth Round and a home match against either Luton Town

or Bolton Wanderers, who play their replay at the Toughsheet Community Stadium later tonight. Manager Sean

Dyche met with the media during his pre-match press conference earlier today.

With the second profit and sustainability rules (PSR) charge against the club

announced just yesterday, this was Dyche’s first chance to respond. Although

he was speaking purely pragmatically, he did touch on the squad’s impact from player sales and retention.

Not too long before the news broke, I was aware of it. They tell me what I need to know. From a broad perspective, after

almost a year here, we rank among the bottom three or four net spenders based on my timeline.

“We allowed some players to expire on their contracts; however, we were

unable to retain them. In the timelines we were given, we sold three young

players to ensure the money was in. Obviously, we wouldn’t have sold those players otherwise.

The new stadium speaks for itself in terms of its impact on the city and the

fact that it was built for charitable purposes. In addition, we’re still working to assemble a team that can compete

while staying within budget, signing players with whom we may not even close deals for a year.

Dyche went into detail about why he believed the point deduction to be unjust.

As the club’s spokesperson, he did make an effort to maintain political correctness, but he also voiced his

disbelief at the bizarre decisions being made and even made a joke about how nonsensical they were

“It’s an odd circumstance to receive a 10-point on-pitch sanction; obviously, we’re still awaiting the appeal. Who knows what will happen next, so we’ll have to

keep an eye on this.” That, I suppose, pretty much sums up a year’s worth of events; I tried to give you a sense of it.

To be clear, that’s how I, a football fan, feel about common sense. The specifics

of the laws and regulations are for the lawyers and the powerful people; I don’t have access to that kind of information.

I believe that occasionally when you combine everything, you conclude that

there isn’t an advantage on the field, even though we receive a sanction on the

field. That one is definitely difficult, no doubt about it. When the next bit comes along, some of that is summarized in all

of that. We hope that the appeal results in better news. Who knows what might happen next?

“I believe that everyone is perplexed, wondering, and hoping that something

will change so that we can regain some of our lost ground and see things from a different angle

In addition, the manager gave a squad update. Dwight McNeil made an early

comeback as a substitute over the weekend, but there are still some concerns ahead of the Palace game.

“Youngy is back on the grass with us, but he can’t keep up with the pace.” Doucs and Seamus have both received some

criticism. We’ll have to decide what to do because Seamus’s hamstring is tight and Doucs is more tired.

It appears that Dyche will have to make some decisions on game day, particularly since we will be facing a well-rested

Palace team following their recent Premier League break. Nonetheless, Dyche reiterated his dedication to the FA Cup:

Although it’s not the same as the Premier League, we always have respect for the

cups. We field teams that are competitive in the cups.
