The ‘big loss’ for Leicester City is back, but they need to get past the ‘player rules’ set by Enzo Maresca.

Before suffering a serious knee injury, Callum Doyle played every minute of

football. Despite being healthy again after missing three months, he is not expected to return right away.

Despite being a “big loss” during his three-month absence, Callum Doyle is a

“very important player,” but that doesn’t guarantee he will return to Leicester City’s starting lineup.

Doyle returned from a serious knee injury to start in the FA Cup victory over Millwall on New Year’s Day, and he also

made his first start since his injury. But he didn’t play in the match between City and his previous loan team, Coventry.

Before sustaining his knee injury in late September, the Manchester City loanee

had played every minute in all competitions under Enzo Maresca. The

manager lamented the absence of a left-footed defender to fill in as a backup. However, James Justin was given the

assignment, and he performed so well that Doyle now has to fight to regain his position.

This has been a recurring theme under Maresca’s leadership, which he refers to

as his “player rules”. When a positional rival returns to full fitness, deputies who

perform well while injured players are sidelined maintain their position. That also applied to Patson Daka and Kelechi

Iheanacho at the end of last month, as well as Jannik Vestergaard and Conor Coady.

That may now also apply to Doyle and Justin. Maresca has been pressuring

Doyle to work hard in the gym in order to get back into the starting lineup.

When asked if Doyle would find it difficult to rejoin the team, Maresca replied, “No, it won’t be difficult. He just

needs to keep working.” We’ll decide whether or not to give him the opportunity right away.

He was a huge help to us the other day (against Millwall) in our desired style of play. Since his injury, we have stated that

it was a significant loss for us in terms of our preferred style of play—that is, the build-up, the switching of play from his

side to the opposing side, and the balls in behind. That’s precisely what he provides.

He’s a really significant player for us overall. We’re glad he’s back. When we

give him another chance, we’ll see. They can play together as well. Doyle and JJ

played together while Southampton was away, with Doyle playing center defense and JJ as full-back.

Doyle’s second assist of the season came from an exquisite ball over the top for

Tom Cannon against Millwall. Earlier in the season, Doyle had set up Kasey

McAteer’s winner at Rotherham with a lengthy switch of play. Doyle’s strengths lie in the passing game; the 20-year-old is

second only to Conor Coady in terms of progressive passes made every 90 minutes, and fourth only to Abdul

Fatawu, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Stephy Mavididi in terms of passes made into the penalty area.
