|Lennox Lewis on Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou: “Zero credibility”
Lennox Lewis has little interest in the March 8 fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou.
Lewis is aware of the financial component and the reasons behind the fights, especially with the Ngannou side:
“The bout between Ngannou and Tyson Fury was amazing. “This battle with AJ is a show as well,” he posted on social media.
We should applaud Ngannou for seizing his chances. There is nothing wrong with him. In 2024, this is just the [heavyweight] division.
From a fighting standpoint, Joshua gains what the former champion misses:
“This fight, in my opinion, lends zero credibility to AJ’s resume,” he continued. “He is expected to prevail in this fight,
and if he does, what does defeating [Ngannou] in his second [heavyweight] match teach him? It will be a total
catastrophe if he loses. Fury was similarly impacted, and it nearly cost him everything.
From a competitive standpoint, Lewis may be right about this matchup, but
what did Joshua learn or acquire from his previous three fights against Otto
Wallin, Robert Helenius, and Jermaine Franklin? What would he have gained by going up against another guy like that?
Whatever you want to call it, Ngannou managed to drop and force Tyson Fury
into a split decision after ten rounds. It was clear that AJ wasn’t going to fight
Fury at this time, and he has already lost twice to Oleksandr Usyk, who is also very busy. Naturally, Deontay Wilder was
supposed to fight in March, but on December 23, Wilder gave birth to a daughter, Joseph Parker.
Joshua, 34, is looking for high-paying bouts. Nothing that would have been close to what he would have gotten to fight Ngannou was available.
There have always been a lot of boxing fights that don’t seem particularly
interesting on paper. Although it’s a fact, no one is arguing that this is a good thing.
