Done deal:Former A’s Reliever Joins Detroit Tigers

Former A’s Reliever Joins Detroit Tigers

Devin Sweet was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. Exactly

one month earlier, the San Francisco Giants had claimed the right-hander off waivers from the Oakland A’s.

On July 19, Sweet, 27, made his major league debut as a member of the Seattle

Mariners. After pitching in two games with the M’s, his earned run average was 9.00. At the start of September, the A’s

claimed him off waivers. He appeared in five games for Oakland, going 6 2/3 innings with a 10.80 ERA. During his

debut season, he gave up 10 hits in 8 2/3 innings while walking six batters overall.

Performance-wise, Sweet excelled in one area that merits consideration for the Tigers bullpen: his 85.2 mph average exit

velocity. Although this is based on a small sample size, the Tigers may find something useful in it.

Sweet has a slider at 86, a changeup at 77, and a four-seamer at 93 in his

arsenal. In 2023, the fastball made up exactly half of his pitches; the slider and change made up the remaining portion.

Sweet does not have to start the season in the major leagues because he still has two option years left, even though he is currently on the Tigers’ 40-man roster.

This ought to give Detroit enough time to assess the righty and determine whether or not he eventually fits with the team before having to make that decision.

Sweet is not included in Detroit’s anticipated bullpen to start the 2024 campaign, according to Roster Resource.

Tyler Nevin was placed on Detroit’s waiver wire as a result of Sweet’s roster addition.
