Wilfried Gnonto was a promising young player at Leeds United who the Yorkshire

team ultimately held on to tightly despite his itching to leave Elland Road during something of a mass exodus during the summer.

After being demoted to the Championship, players like Marc Roca, Jack Harrison, and Brenden Aaronson were free to move on, and Gnonto had

first considered joining them. He had even submitted a transfer request because Everton was showing interest.

As it turned out, the former Zurich star, who signed a £3.8 million contract to join

the team in the summer of 2022, did not get his wish, and despite the team’s

relegation to the second division, he has since had a challenging season under new manager Daniel Farke.

While Daniel James and Crysencio Summerville—who combined for 21 Championship goals in 2023–24—have excelled in the lower division, Gnonto

has only managed one assist and one goal through the first three rounds of competition.

The 20-year-old has not performed as was anticipated this season after shining in the top division last season, scoring

four goals. As a result, an exit this month appears to be a very real possibility for the diminutive speedster.

Leeds may be keeping an eye out for the ideal replacement to help send Gnonto packing in light of reports that the

former Inter Milan player is expected to sign a contract with West Ham United before the January transfer window closes.
