Leeds fought to the last penalty minute to grab crucial 3 points as promotion is

Leeds defeated Preston 2-1 at home, thanks to a stoppage-time penalty scored by Joel Piroe, to strengthen their chances of earning automatic promotion.

Second-half replacement After Ryan Ledson was judged to have handled, Piroe scored from the spot in the third minute of extra time, and Leeds’

dramatic victory saw them cut the deficit between the top two teams to four points.

Preston took the lead in the second minute thanks to a goal from Will Keane. Despite Dan James’ equalization four

minutes later, Leeds’ afternoon against resilient opponents proved to be frustrating.

Freddie Woodman, Milutin Osmajic, and Duane Holmes were all sidelined by illness for Preston, but they got off to a great start

Liam Lindsay headed Ben Whiteman’s free-kick into the penalty area back

across goal, and Keane finished off Liam Millar’s mishandled effort after Leeds failed to clear.

Preston did, however, have a brief lead. James headed Leeds level after Junior Firpo raced on to Crysencio

Summerville’s ball down the left and cut a beautiful cross to the far post on the overlap.

The visitors showed no signs of giving up, and on Boxing Day, Preston defeated

Leeds 2-1 at Deepdale. Millar’s goal-bound attempt required a spectacular save from Illan Meslier

Even though they improved before the half, the home team was able to hold off Preston goalkeeper Dai Cornell with a header from James’ superb cross and an off-target effort from Georginio Rutter from Ilia Gruev’s corner.

Shortly after the restart, Leeds should have taken the lead thanks to Summerville’s excellent run to the by-line and cut back, but Rutter’s shot struck the post

Leeds continued where they left off, with Bamford shooting wide after Rutter played him in and seeing another effort blocked before James’ deft chip just missed the crossbar

However, Preston was proving to be resilient opponents, and when Cornell

was booked for time wasting in the 82nd minute by referee David Webb, the home crowd’s annoyance turned to joy.

After tripping over Gruev, Ledson became the fifth Preston player to

receive a yellow card, causing a mass brawl in midfield and earning Bamford a booking in the process

Further opportunities were wasted by Rutter and substitute Joel Piroe for

Leeds, while Robbie Brady’s last-ditch tackle on Bamford was celebrated by the Preston substitutes.

However, after Joe Rodon’s header, Ledson’s extended arm made contact with the ball in the area during added

time, and Piroe maintained his composure to bury his penalty and bring the house down at Elland Road.
