Atlanta braves have sign The ‘sword’ master for every pitch type

To find out who in baseball tosses the ugliest pitches, try this new method: Take a look at the pitchers that produced the most “swords” for each kind of pitch.

Using Hawk-Eye bat tracking, Statcast recently unveiled its new swords metric, which categorizes the awkward half-

swings that a pitcher induces with a particularly nasty pitch (named after Pitching Ninja). Although Dylan Cease

Michael Kopech’s four-seam fastball: fifteen swords

Even though Kopech had a difficult season the previous year, the overwhelming stuff remains. The right-hander for the White Sox is still capable

of producing above-average rise and run with his four-seamer, which averaged 95.2 mph with a high spin rate of 2,501 rpm. Hence, hitters will believe he is

throwing a strike when he elevates his fastball slightly above the zone, only to have it sail past them. Because of

Kopech’s rapid speed, they are unable to halt their swing in time, and Kopech wins his swords.

Since the sinker is intended to induce ground balls and weak contact rather than strikeouts, it isn’t really a swing-

and-miss pitch. Thus, you won’t witness many swords being used by sinkerballers. However, it should come as no surprise that Montgomery topped the sinker swords leaderboard if you

witnessed his dominance during the Rangers’ World Series run. The swords indicate how well the pitch works for

Montgomery, who finished as one of the Major Leagues’ top five most valuable sinkers the previous season
