Chelsea’s Viktor Gyokeres stance could have major impact at Coventry City

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the former Coventry City striker amid a sell-on clause for the Sky Blues

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Chelsea are not prioritising a move for Gyokeres this January, despite wanting to add firepower to the team.
  •  Coventry City may miss out on profiting from Gyokeres’ future sale due to Chelsea’s focus on other targets.
  •  Gyokeres’ impressive performances in Portugal could result in a big fee for Coventry if he is sold in the summer.

Chelsea are not prioritising a move for Viktor Gyokeres this January.

Football Insider claims that the Blues intend to bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s squad with some additional firepower.

The Sporting CP forward isn’t thought to be the team’s first pick, though; other options are being considered.

This might be a blow to Coventry City, who committed to a sell-on clause when they sold the forward last summer,

meaning they would profit from any future sales of the Swede.

Gyokeres has earned a lot of praise for his performances in Portugal, where he

has contributed 13 goals and eight assists from 17 Liga Nos appearances.

Coventry’s Gyokeres sell-on clause

Before being sold to the Sky Blues last summer, Gyokeres was a vital member of the team.

The striker helped the squad get to the play-off final last year with 21 goals and

10 assists, but he was let go since they were unable to defeat Luton Town.

The 25-year-old was recruited by Sporting Clube de Portugal for an initial

fee of €20 million (£17.1 million), with the option to increase on €4 million (£3.4 million).

Coventry may make money from the player again in the future because to a

sell-on clause that was agreed. The clause was worth 15% of any future sale.

According to reports, Chelsea is considering making an offer this month

of €85 million (£73 million), which would bring in a considerable sum for the Championship team.

But it seems the London team may investigate other options before making

a move for the player who is based in Portugal.

Chelsea have struggled for form this season despite spending a fortune

bringing in a whole new squad for Pochettino following his arrival as manager in the summer.

The Blues are currently ninth in the Premier League table.

In the meantime, Coventry is attempting to contend for promotion to the top flight this season once more.

After losing to the Hatters in a penalty shootout last summer, Mark Robins’

team lost several important players, including Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer.

However, the team has improved recently and is now ranked in the top six in the Championship table.

Now that summer additions like Ellis Simms and Haji Wright have had time to

get used to the club, the Sky Blues have won five of their previous six games.

Coventry’s next match is an FA Cup away against Sheffield Wednesday on January 26.

Coventry set to profit off Gyokeres soon

Gyokeres has been a standout player for Sporting CP this season, which is attracting attention from some of Europe’s major clubs.

While a move this January doesn’t seem likely, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him move in the summer for a big fee.

The negotiation for Gyokeres was handled extremely well, as the club earned a big fee up-front, while also securing a future fee as well, despite him entering the final year of his contract.

He might fetch around to £100 million if he were to be sold, giving Coventry a substantial profit that they could use to bolster the Robins team.
