HIGHLIGHTS
- Tony Mowbray’s comments on Jay Stansfield should interest Sunderland and Ipswich Town in their search for a striker.
- Mowbray insists that Stansfield is enjoying his football at Birmingham City and wants him to stay.
- Both Sunderland and Ipswich should make a move for Stansfield to strengthen their chances of promotion.
Regarding Birmingham City striker Jay Stansfield, Tony Mowbray’s remarks
should intrigue both Sunderland and Ipswich Town in their respective pursuits of a striker.
After their 2-1 victory over Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, the former Black Cats manager discussed the 21-year-old’s
future with the team. The on-loan Fulham striker opened the score at the
bet365 Stadium with his ninth goal of the year.
Ipswich Town and Sunderland reportedly expressed interest in signing
the highly regarded striker during the January transfer window; the Cottagers have the option to recall him this month.
Several clubs are apparently keen to move for the player.
Furthermore, Mowbray’s remarks might rekindle Sunderland and Ipswich’s
interest in obtaining a long-term deal for the highly-regarded striker.
Tony Mowbray makes claim on Jay Stansfield’s future with Birmingham City
Stansfield is enjoying his football in the West Midlands, Mowbray claimed,
despite interest from rival Championship clubs.
Mowbray told BirminghamLive, “I talk to him most days, and he is really enjoying
his football and scoring goals.” Would he like to return and sit on the bench for a
few minutes here and there? A young player should, in my opinion, want to
play, want to score, and want to show off his skills.
“There is nothing we can do if they do call him back. No, I’m not expecting it. While we have him, let’s just enjoy him.
Before signing a new four-year contract with Blues last August, Stansfield signed a new deal with Fulham. He has already
received Premier League playing time and is well-regarded by the Cottagers.
But Mowbray wants the Blues to seize the opportunity if it presents itself to sign Stansfield on a long-term basis.
“I believe we should definitely be in the market for (Stansfield) if there’s a
number where he could definitely come and play here,” the Blues manager
continued. I believe he finds it quite enjoyable.
“He would want to play in the Premier League if he thought he was going to play
in the Premier League, but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t want to go and sit on the
bench, I’m sure he much prefers playing in the Championship and scoring goals.
It’s not our decision, it’s Fulham’s decision, but I know he’s enjoying it.”
Sunderland and Ipswich should be on high alert following Tony Mowbray’s comments on Jay Stansfield
Without a doubt, Sunderland’s lack of a competent striker could ultimately sink
their hopes of making the playoffs this year.
That was further confirmed by Friday night’s 2-1 loss to Hull City at home,
where they managed just three of 15 attempted attempts on goal, compared to just two for the visitors.
With Sunderland’s forwards managing just two goals between them this season,
the Black Cats have been highly dependent on Jack Clarke’s goal.

Sunderland has expressed interest in signing Divin Mubama of West Ham on loan, according to The Mail’s transfer
confidential. The club is willing to take chances on less well-known but
promising forwards who haven’t performed well this season.
Stansfield has long been of interest to Sunderland; Mowbray told Sunderland
Nation that, prior to Stansfield joining Birmingham City, he attempted to get the striker to the Stadium of Light.
But in order for Sunderland to have any chance of making the playoffs, they
might need to make a big effort to sign Stansfield, either on a temporary or permanent basis.
After George Hirst’s injury late in the season, it appears that the Tractor Boys
need to sign a striker in order to maintain their hopes of making the playoffs.
The 24-year-old, who has six goals this season for Ipswich, was seriously injured
in their Boxing Day tie with Leicester City, according to manager Kieran
McKenna, who spoke with BBC Radio Suffolk.
Although they have enough cover in Kayden Jackson, Connor Chaplin, and
Nathan Broadhead, McKenna may bring in another striker at Portman Road to
help their bid for promotion if they let striker Freddie Ladapo to go on loan to
Charlton Athletic during the January transfer window.
Failing to do so could ruin their chances of receiving an automatic promotion,
along with the possibility of one of their important forwards getting hurt.
Stansfield has proven himself at this level, so if they can sign him, it will not
only be a great addition but also a declaration of determination towards
their goal of making their first Premier League comeback in 22 years.
