Falcons coach hunt ,the battle line has now been drawn between Bil Belichick vs.

There may not always be a third option when faced with a choice between two unpleasant circumstances in life. That kind of decision may be drawing near for

many Falcons supporters, but to make matters worse, it’s one that is completely out of our control.

By that, what do I mean? As President/CEO/right-hand man to owner

Arthur Blank, Rich McKay has long been a source of reporting power and influence within the Falcons

organization. If hired, he would have to report in to him, which could be a barrier for some coaches and executives.

Although McKay is regarded as an advisor to general manager Terry Fontenot and any potential head coach

the team hires, there is much disagreement within the organization about how much control he actually has

over decisions. Either way, a strong coach accustomed to having a lot of power and going straight to a general

manager or owner rather than an executive like McKay might object to joining such a structure.

Let’s introduce Bill Belichick. Though it seems unlikely given the current power structure, Blank clearly wants the legendary head coach to lead the

Falcons, as evidenced by the constant barrage of reports from Atlanta and around the league. That hire might be

made in the coming days if you were just getting McKay to report to Belichick, the coach. McKay is in danger of losing his role for the first time since Thomas

Dimitroff was hired because Belichick may very well fire Fontenot and McKay and report directly to Blank. He’ll want

that kind of power to remake the organization in his image and preference.

According to Zach Klein of WSB-TV, the choice is either to fire McKay and hire

Belichick or to keep McKay and hire a different candidate—though we’re not

exactly sure who that would be just yet. If accurate, it presents a critical juncture for this organization, as it must decide

between one of the most important and trusted intermediaries in NFL history and Blank.

As one might anticipate from my previous writings about Belichick, I’m

concerned that Blank appears to still be completely focused on him as the head coach. I don’t think Belichick offers you

the best chance to win right now because of his degree of organizational control and the radical shift in the Falcons’

personnel, operations, and roster building that may take some time and cause significant growing pains. Given

the extensive search and Blank’s apparent long-term commitment to Belichick ,it’s easy to imagine an owner

who is fixated on winning and unmoved by the wide range of other contenders Atlanta has put together. That caliber of

However, given Belichick’s role, it would be ridiculous to overlook him if Blank and other executives genuinely believe he is the best candidate for the company.

Regardless of the value McKay adds to Blank on a personal level and the wisdom he imparts to executives and coaches who report to him, it is

purported that he does not make decisions for himself and is not the same football mind as Belichick

Either coach who is willing to work with Terry Fontenot to acquire players but is

not willing to report to McKay—Belichick or, for example, Jim Harbaugh, another

contender who will probably want a large amount of organizational say—should just not have to report to McKay.

Because of Blank’s unwavering faith in McKay, I can easily see him selecting McKay over a coach. However, if Blank

were to select a general candidate—or even a particular one like Harbaugh—I would argue that would be incorrect.

The issue for the Falcons is that, if this reporting is accurate (and, once more, there has been widespread and consistent dissemination of the notions

that Blank is infatuated with Belichick and that McKay’s influence prevents him from being hired), then this is solely Blank’s decision. Given the (in my

opinion, to be clear) unreasonable fascination with Belichick, the misguided pursuit of Deshaun Watson that seemed

to heavily involve Blank, and the fact that, regardless of your feelings about McKay in general,

Given the (in my opinion, to be clear) unreasonable fascination with Belichick,

the misguided pursuit of Deshaun Watson that seemed to heavily involve Blank, and the fact that, regardless of

your feelings about McKay in general, Blank is likely to find it difficult to let go of his investment in him as an executive

and friend, that’s not a judgment I am particularly inclined to trust at this point. The combination of all of that and

Blank’s need to win right away puts this in danger of becoming an emotional choice, which is unsettling considering

that whichever way he decides to go will have a significant impact on and ripple through the Falcons organization.
